I have played Axis & Allies WWII quite a lot and I like it as it is a decent medium weight wargame.

Why would I want to get the WWI version?

Is it merely the theme (and map) or is the game play hugely different?

It's primarily the theme. The mechanics are very similar to the WWII games.

The great thing about this game is that there is only one combat round (for land battles). That refelects the immobility of the period and makes it a whole different game (at least I hope).

This version has "contested " territories. I assume that this has to do with their only being one roll per combat. Plus, different combatants means different territories and strategies need to be discovered and employed.

Aircraft have half the range, so you can no longer use them *everywhere*.

From the promo shot, it looks like only the infantry pieces are unique to each player, but all other pieces are shared. Larry hasn't posted a rundown of the UK's first turn yet, but it doesn't look good for Australia (the map is a diamond shape from Eastern US & Canada to Western India, including Africa), although Larry could still surprise us with special ANZAC rules (special reinforcement rules, etc.).
