No kidding - the site got put through a blender or something

I think the proper thing to do would be to go "good work on the new site, Derk and Aldie!" but since I haven't had time to poke around yet, I don't know if it's any better or not

Bleeech!

More freaking google ads? Stuff scattered everywhere?

Ugh.

Needs quite a bit of tweaking.

No kidding! This was quite the surprise.

My initial reaction was "Yow, that's busy!" Gotta poke around some now...

I guess the "portal" look is in vogue.

Aye, definately a surprise on that refresh! So far it's not bad. You can edit your front pages and display only the items you want displayed (within reason). I've got my front page already tweaked.

Thanks Aldie and Derk! (and everyone else involved with the site).

Powers:Coleridge:Milton: Faith...must be, if anything, a clear-eyed recognition of the patterns and tendencies, to be found in every piece of the world's fabric, which are the lineaments of God.

That's Tim Powers' fictional Samuel Coleridge "quoting" John Milton in _The Anubis Gates_.

That was a bit of a shock! I like the configurability. The red blobs are a bit strange, but other than that I think I can get used to it.

Have moved my comments to Aldie's New BGG Thread -

Cliff's Notes Comment: My initial reaction was that this is very, very intimidating for new users wishing to discover boardgames in general.

I really like how much you can customize the front page though. You have a bunch of settings under MyGeek!

YIKES.

Was tabbed browsing of threads and forums such a bad thing? It looks like BGG retched and vomitted stuff everywhere.

Of course I can't complain since I still haven't sent in my supporter money yet, but still....yeesh.

Ahhh! This is horrid. Ads everywhere, and much wasted screen estate. Now that Aldie has quit his day job I can understand that BGG is now supposed to make (more) money, but ...

Dazed and confused, but trying to adapt:

Far, far, far too busy. The previous "tabbed" UI was closer to contemporary portal UI design than this Jackson Pollack-like splatter of color, graphics, and words.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but the new design makes my eyes hurt just trying to scan it for something I might want to read.

Another quick reaction: Discussion on a particular Geeklist drops off as soon as the list is bumped off the entry page by newer Geeklists. Therefore, this new look may severely truncate that initial flurry of additions and comments. I know, you can page through the Geeklists, but how many people are likely to figure that out from the tiny link provided? Probably the same principle applies to new reviews, session reports, and other content that could be viewed across a broader swath of "real estate."

Aldie has now officially announced the switch! I've locked this thread so that we can keep all of the comments in one place.
