I don't have a variant here. Just an idea that should work.

Play solo games, starting with a blank slate character and building into a customized Mage Knight. The general sketch is to begin with a deck that has no unique cards and a set of skills that's nothing but all the Motivation skills. Play a solo conquest scenario with one city. Add a figure that is the Mage Knight corresponding to that city's color, or something, let's say you face Norowas and the white city first. At the end of the game, if you win, add Norowas' unique cards to your starting deck (replacing their counterparts) and choose one of Norowas' revealed skills to add to your skill choices, then choose a second to replace Norowas' Motivation if you wish. Now take on another game against another color city, probably higher level.

After defeating all 4 (5) Mage Knights, your starting deck will be very potent, your skills will be customized, and you will be ready to take on your final challenge...? With the expansion it should clearly be Volkare. In fact, with the expansion you'll end up with 10 skill tokens if you face Wolfhawk too, which is exactly right. Hm, put Wolfhawk in a core tile Labyrinth, the 6-move portion, and give it defenders like a City.

fleshing out this idea to a full concept would be defenitely cool

ala:
each confrontation: how many day/night rounds
how to increase the difficulty after each confrontation?

I think this has great potential and you should work it out.
