Hey Guys! So I'd appreciate some recommendations for a strategy game with medieval theme that supports 4 players, possibly even more. I'm looking for something with area control and direct conflict (Risk comes to mind as a comparison). Thanks!

Joan of Arc

IIRC, there are some rules issues that need fixing, but I think that enough help is available that the game is reasonable playable.

If you want a medieval game that gives a similar feel to Risk then Warlords of Europe is the game that you are looking for.

Shogun
War of the Ring (Second Edition) (There are rules for 4P, though it's really a 2P game)
El Grande
A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition)

Light? Heavy? Somewhere in the middle?

Playing time?

Without a little more to go on, I could recommend anything from Hibernia to Warrior Knights.

The theme doesn't come through very much, but Notre Dame is a fairly light strategy game that depicts the middle ages that plays well from 2 to 5.

I agree the Joan of Arc fills this niche nicely.
I also like Samurai & katana (excellent with 4-6) by the same designer.
And if you prefer something with a maritime feel to it, then Fire and Axe: A Viking Saga (if you get a copy), or Serenissima, which both add some trading, raiding and piracy to the mix. All of these games give a real historical feel, without being overburdened with rules.

Warrior Knights (although I still prefer the original), or Domaine would probably scratch that itch.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys! From what little info I had read Warrior Knights and Warlords of Europe, as well as Shogun, seem to be the closest to what I had in mind.

I guess it would be somewhere in the middle with playing time of 3-4 hours, which is why A Game of Thrones seems a little too much for me.

Late medieval period four players lots of conflict.

GMT's Crown of Roses

Crown of Roses

Cards and blocks, pretty map, devious shifting alliances, what more do you need?

This is the conflict that the alternate history known as Game of Thrones is based upon.

Alex Randolph's DIE WIKINGER KOMMEN (CLAIM) fits the bill. It's area control. It would be more fun if you could get some knight pieces to replace the generic pieces.

The game that comes to my mind fitting your description is Lancaster. Medieval England (although the theme is kinda pasted on), nice mix of worker placement, area control, bidding. Plays up to 5 players, it offers a nice degree of interaction and it's over in about an hour.
It's a medium weight game. I also recommend the big expansion that just came out in 2012: it boosts complexity a bit and it's really a nice addition.

Wallenstein (second edition)/Shogun fits your description!

And they are the only one with the cube tower sued for combat resolution!
