This is in reference to the latest 1st edition versions of On the Brink.

I recently purchased On the Brink, fearing the first edition eventually being either costly or rare (I far prefer the first edition artwork to the second). However, my Pandemic cards are glossy on the back, and I believe this means I'll have some compatibility issues, yes?

Could somebody kindly elaborate on what kind of issues I'm likely to have? Is it just the stock, or are the cards sized differently (or something entirely unique to my expectations)?

Thanks in advance.

The cards are the same size.

First edition first printing of Pandemic came with flat finish cards. Subsequent printings game with linen finish cards. On the Brink comes with linen finish cards as well.

OTB addds two infection deck cards and many player deck cards (several special cards, and the virulent strain epidemic cards)

If you clear sleeve them, it will be difficult to tell the difference. My friend has a copy and he doesn't sleeve them and he doesn't notice the difference when he plays. I notice the difference, but then again if I pay attention, I can tell the difference between both base and OTB linen finish cards.

Don't just make do with those cards, at least not yet. Z-Man offered to replace those glossy first edition cards with linen cards. You had to send in a specific card from the glossy deck and they'd send you a full linen deck. Get in touch with them and see if they have any linen decks of the old art left. With the new edition out now they might not have any old ones left, but it's worth a shot.

Here is an old thread about it

The announcement has since disappeared from the Z-Man website, but here is a Wayback Machine snapshot of the webpage from 9/30/2011 (the oldest snapshot that includes the announcement)

http://web.archive.org/web/20110930160807/http://www.zmangames.com/boardgames/pandemicOTB.htm

Copy and paste that whole line above into your address bar, including BOTH "http://"s (because it has two, BGG won't make a nice pretty--and functional--link)

The text says:
"NOTE TO FIRST EDITION PANDEMIC OWNERS: If your cards are gloss with no linen finish then you have a first printing (Feb-April 2008). We are offering a trade in so that your cards will match the newer printings which have a linen finish. Starting today, you may send us a copy of your 1st printing Operation Expert role card and I will send you a complete set of Infection and Player cards with a linen finish (yes, it includes an Operation Expert role card). Please send the card to the address in the contact us page. Make sure your address is legible. Please allow some time to process requests."

You probably shouldn't mail away the Operation Expert card until after verifying with Z-Man that the offer is still available, since you might not get the card back and would be stuck with an incomplete set of glossy cards.
