If a Nightgaunt survives the cosmic battle, it can carry off one of the defending allies. How does this work? If there are two allies, each of strength 5, facing a single Nightgaunt, does it get to kill (bury) one defending ally and carry off (discard) the other? Or can it only carry off an ally who would otherwise be burried?

Unless the card specifically says it can take a defeated ally then one will be defeated and one will be taken.

So assuming it takes one afterwards and you do the fight and one ally is defeated, then that one cant be taken and it gets the survivor.
And if it takes one first before combat, then the one left behind gets defeated.

So when the nightgaunts power comes into play theres only one ally left one way or the other.

All reality is a game. Physics at its most fundamental, the very fabric of our universe, results directly from the interaction of certain fairly simple rules, and chance... (Iain Banks)

Correct: the Nightgaunt does 3 points of damage and then carries away a random defending ally. It does not bypass defenders, so the three points of damage will kill one or more of them. Then if there are survivors, one is randomly selected to be carried off (discarded).

They're tough!
