My wife and I are currently sketching out plans for finishing our basement. A large portion of the space will be dedicated to gaming including some tables to play on and tons of storage (not to mention dehumidifiers and a bulletproof sump system).

My question is this: if you could play on any type of game table, what would you play on?

I was thinking it would be nice to have at least one felt-top table with casino-grade fabric (but without those huge poker table bumpers). For card games or tile laying games, something like that would be ideal. I've also seen some nice leather-topped tables, but am not sure how they'd play.

I'm also considering getting some of those small drink and snack tables to keep food and drinks off of the playing surface. Does anyone else do this?

So - has anyone else already put together their ultimate gaming space? If so, what's it like?

I went out there in search of experience, to taste and to touch and to feel as much, as a man can before he repents...

I am far away from creating my ultimate gaming space, but I've taken a few short steps. I do use small side tables for refreshments and they have come in very handy. I would also recommend having a light above every table. Right now mine are on the walls and it creates a great amount of glare across the table.

Make sure when it's all done you post some pictures!

Not mine, but a project with some similarities to yours:

I like the look of those drink holders. I'd have to go for hexes, though, not squares. Perhaps a reversible part under the plexiglass.

We actually use a poker table to play on. The felt surface is very nice and the chip holders are great for holding little game bits. We have a "No food or drinks on the table" rule as well, so we use small tables next to the players for refreshments.

I've been building a table myself, and the surface that I finally went with is ultra-suede. It synthetic, and has a great playing surface, repels spills, and is supossedly easy to clean.

Nekura. Don't do it! That is hideous. The table has no character. It looks like it belongs in an operating theatre!yuk

I don't have a picture to post, but my group plays on an old picnic table that's painted a weird pale green and is covered with about ten years of gaming related graffiti.
It started in a friend's basement and has been moved about four times since. It's pretty ugly but it has character dammit!

I'll have to get a pic next time I'm at my friend's (the current keeper of The Table) house.
