2nd Mission

Word got around that our green bomber squadron did not do as good as a job as we had hoped. Two days later we were sent back again to hit the Rail Station at Amiens again.

Again we got our orders for an early morning raid and climbed into the still new looking Iron Maiden. Captain Mike Bell told us to strap in tight so we could get the job done right this time.

We climbed up to the top of the formation this time and we were on our way.
We meet no enemy resistance from their fighters to the target. It must have been the bad weather, as we approached the target it was hampered by poor weather.

"We are not here to sight see", barked the Bombardier Ron Duke and he glided the plane to its target. As the bomb doors were opened we took a big hit from the Medium flak around the Rail Yard. The Iron Maiden took a hit in the Rudder and she shimmied with the explosion. The plane heaved violently and was thrown off course.

Although the hit had caused no real damage or casualties… the plane was thrown off course and the bombs were dropped well off their target. All this way and not even a bomb close to the rail yard. Still, we hoped the other bombers had done better.

As we closed our bay doors and headed back out, the weather was still bad. This worked to our favor as we did not encounter any enemy fighters on the way back.

With another perfect landing under his belt Mike Bell called out over the radio (which had been fixed) that’s two down… 23 to go……
The words hung in our ears like a kids waiting for Christmas.
