We use a 10 sided die instead of a 6 sided die. The luck factor is drastically reduced if you do, and it makes travelling the hallways far more favorable. You can still get stuck with a 1, but since most rooms are 3-5 spaces apart and the average result of a 10 sided die is 5.5, the game moves much more smoothly. It also makes the Libary and Billiard room far more accessible and people visit them much more often.

Hmm, why not just a six-sided dice with the values 3,4,4,5,5,6?

Try the card game version of Clue -- it eliminates the die roll altogether. It also plays in less time, has more choices, and is just a lot more fun. We use the figures from our Clue game to brighten up the gameplay but they aren't required.

Why use dice at all? Simply substitute a more deterministic movement rule:

1. Players may move to the next adjacent room (left or right of the current room).

2. Players may move through a secret passage.

3. Players may move into the corridors from any room.

4. Players may move into any room from the corridor.

The 2003 version of the game added a second die to the game's equipment and rules. It makes much more sense this way, why they didn't add this sooner is beyond me.

I used a die with 2,3,3,4,4,5 today and it was better. No more rolling 1 for three turns in a row. I could see two d4s or even a d4+d6 being good choices.
