I am currently doing an experiment in minimization of animation for my avatar.

Do you like the reduced animation? Do you prefer the pop-up?

Tell me your thoughts.

(Yeah, I know, he was more loveable when only visible briefly. That's a mug that don't stand up to scrutiny.)

Full avatar as shown in my profile:

Re: Difference in File Size

Original before BGG crops: 71,102 bytes
Original when I crop it to 64x64: 26,692 bytes (I should have done that years ago.)
Non-Popup top: 1484 bytes
Non-Popup bottom: 7423 bytes

Edit 2: Changed back to pop up now.

I really like the popup, and my fiancee concurs. She giggled when she saw it the first time.

1) Get Opera.
2) Hit F12
3) Uncheck "enable GIF animation"
4) pages are much less distracting

And besides, Opera sucks, Firefox-ko and Thunderbird-ko for the win!

The animated one, all I see is a green blob. But I block animated gifs. Keep the static one...

I prefer the animated popup one. But then again, I love the sound of my 2 young daughter's laughter when they come in my office and see BGG on the screen and ask to see "the giraffe" again. and again... and again...
so that may be coloring my decision a bit.
Heck, I put you on my buddy list so it would make it easier to find it each time for them...

Keeping the animated one will force those old farts still using 96K modems to go out and get a real internet connection. This is a good thing. They will thank you for it later.

You're assuming it's available in their area in the first place, or that they'd think it was worth the extra expense to view an animated avatar.

A few responses to that:

1) I have a hard time arguing with you because I worship Fallout and Fallout 2.
2) I was really only joking about forcing others to do anything, although I do honestly believe he should keep it. That comment was meant to be tounge in cheek, not contentious.
3) Because speedy internet isn't available/affordable in all places, doesn't mean we should halt the progression of what it can do and wait around for the rest of the world to catch up. It's unfortionate that some people cannot partake, but I don't belive that should top the rest of us from enjoying the full potential of the internet. However, if the 'full potential' only encompasses a small percentage of the internet going population, and ruins it for everybody else, then I would agree with you. I'm don't believe that this is the case, though.

Thank you for all the replies! I like the idea that the pop up amuses your children! Tell them the only have a little while longer to see it stay!

I will switch back tonight when I get home from work. (Oh, that might be tomorrow night as I have gaming tonight until late.) That will also encourage me to use the one that was optimized to be about 3 times smaller.

I also will investigate and see if I can make the GIF so that the first frame is popped up, but then does the normal green. That way, the non animators will get the popped up image.

OK, next question: How do I get ideas of what to do with the Uberbadge? I was never any good at naming pets, or thinking of new things to do. I am more of a "Oh, that looks good. Let's make it better." kind of guy.

I've always like the animated one, but the giraffe takes too long to show up IMHO

But let's face it, we could never have enough giraffe could we?
