Market Rumors, Merchant Ships and Opulence tell:
Once during the Event Phase......

Does player get the benefit on each season? If so, Opulence may make lot of gold for the player(s).

Do Hubris, Persian Tribute, Famine, Persian War only have effect after those cards are flipped up? Or the Archon choose the victim(s) for each Event Phase?

Hi, Arthur!

Yes, the player gets the benefit each season. Opulence can have a powerful effect on the game, but since it requires a player to have a Treasury in play and to save Gold from the previous turn, it often doesn't get used more than once per player per Year, even if it comes up as the first Event of the Season.

Remember that a player who is saving his Gold to double it for Opulence isn't spending it during the previous Build Phase. That can sometimes be very costly, especially if Hubris turns up.

That said, I have occasionally seen players use Opulence more than once (or use it once and gain a LOT of Gold), and that was a great strength for those players, but not enough to completely turn the tide since so many other types of Commodities are also needed to complete one's Structures.

The effect of these Event Cards triggers every Season. Therefore, the nature of a game's strategy may change significantly if one of these Events comes up early in the Year. The greatest challenge that the players will face is if Persian Tribute comes up as the first Event of Year Two. In those games, the Archon tends to get passed around quite a bit to even out the damage, especially if the Tools Workshops have not yet been constructed. Those games tend to go all the way until the end of Year Three, and some clever tactics will be required to pull ahead in the midst of the Persian's attacks. This is the main reason that we recommend removing Persian Tribute during The Beginner Game.

Thanks!

Andrew
