Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I was wondering if there is a 2 player version of Settlers of Catan availible? I already have regular Settlers of Catan, perhaps there are 2 player rules I'm not aware of?

Many thanks,
Scott

There's a Settlers of Catan card game(http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/278), which is for two players. There are also rules for two player versions of regular Settlers of Catan available here on the Geek. Here's one example: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/60692.

Personally, we play two players straight out of the box. No rule changes. It's... different... from 3 or 4. Trading still happens, if you both know what you're doing.

There's also the settlers "Einsiedler" version
(Einsiedler=hermit in german)

Front of the box

Back of the box

No more annoying dice rolling!
No more endless gaming nights!
End of the game is assured immediately

Have fun,
Simon

Yes, there is one board game in the world of Catan:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/3655

First I've ignored that fact, that Settlers of Canaan is for two gamer too. Indeed for two gamer, because you will receive lot's of resources and nobody has to trade for goods. Just throw the dice often enough and you will get any good you want. On the fixed board there is really enough space to build enough villages and cities.

I have had an enjoyable time playing with fellow BGGer Nick Borko's 2-player variant:

Give it a try... you may like it!

Meh. I beg to differ. Though the box may say that it's playable with 2, there is a serious flaw. If you roll a 7, then you can't hose the player who is doing the best - you just take a resource from the other player after blocking his/her production. Even if they are losing. If one person rolls a 7 multiple times, then the other player LOSES THE GAME. He doesn't even get to try to be competetive because the robber is always blocking his ever dwindling supplies. Not a fun way to lose, IMO.

I've only played it "2-player" once, and I won't ever play it again. I suppose that you could just ignore the "7" rule, but that takes some of the kick out of it, now doesn't it? There are plenty of GREAT 2 player games that you don't need to tweak the rules to enjoy.

I'll also suggest that you avoid the SoC Card Game. Some seem to like it, but I found it to be a boring, overblown mess. I never came even CLOSE to finishing a game in the suggested timeframe (I've played 3-4 times and our average time was about double that listed on the box - and no, I we didn't suffer from Analysis Paralysis).

Save Settlers for when you have 3 or 4 people. That's where it's best.

There is Starship Catan out there and it is quite good, but it really doesn't resemble Settlers all that much...

My wife and I regularly enjoy playing NickB's version linked at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/60692

We allow trading with each other, though, and start with a settlement and a city to speed things up a bit at the start of the game... and we don't allow the robber on the board until we both have one extra settlement/city.

Direct link to my 2-player version: http://nick.borko.org/games/Catan2Players.pdf

Rerolling a 7 in the first 2 rounds is a good suggestion to make sure the game gets going. I also liked what someone posted in another thread about taking the robber off the board if your roll it twice in succession, so as to not punish the other player so much. That may be a nice variant if you're not playing cutthroat angry
