Playing for the first time with the right rules (not those in the rules book) helped. The change is that in a turn you can:
1. Pass (but still play a card)
2. Trade 1 amphora
3. Trade 2 amphoras (in same or separate colours)
4. Trade 1 amphora in each of the three colours
This offers a lot more freedom and opportunity for taking advantage of the market manipulations going on and so increasing your score.
In our game, Nick and I (the old hands who knew how deadly the endgame selloff can be) sold down and spent the game driving red down, down, down once Kevin and Andrew invested heavily in it. With only 3 or 4 trades in a turn, and three other people playing cards aimed at disadvantaging you, you need to be careful with your investments not to stray to extremes in position taking it seems.
Scores: Nick and Pat tied on 93, Andrew and Kevin tied on 56 (unusual outcome, n'est-ce pas)
A rating of 6 after 4 plays for 'ok game, some challenge at least'. Worthy of more plays as a 30-45 minute game.
