Engine Upgrade "Freebie"
- for a longer game -
________________________

Our group tried-out a fun variant tonight, that helps to lengthen the game. If, for example, your group finds that a six-player session finishes too quickly, you might want to try this.

What is the Engine Upgrade Freebie?

Whenever a player upgrades their Engine, that player draws one goods cube randomly from the black bag, and places it on any one GRAY CITY of their choosing. This can be done to a GRAY CITY that already has an Empty City Marker on it.

While it may shorten the game somewhat by helping an already strong player become stronger, this is more than negated by the ability to remove Empty City Markers for "free", thus delaying the end-game trigger.

NOTE 1) This freebie only applies to GRAY CITIES, not COLORED CITIES.

NOTE 2) The player must announce the name of the GRAY CITY to receive the goods cube BEFORE drawing one from the black bag. (Thanks to Kiri/gnurd for this emphasis.)

We enjoyed this during a single six-player session (a session with only one newbie that lasted ~2.5 hours). Please let us know how you find it if you choose to try it.

Note that we were (mostly) playing that the player making the upgrade
chooses the city to receive the bonus cube before learning the color
of the cube. I think that the variant lengthened the game by perhaps
two or three turns, allowing one player to acquire a level-7 train and
another to build the New York/Kansas City major line (at a cost of 24
shares).
