Only played this once last night after a brisk slash/burn reading of the rules, so this might be covered by the rules and we missed it:

During the execution of a quest, the active player AND the monster both take enough hits to die within the same resolution. After a short debate, we agreed to the following:

The player dies but gets the XP for the quest, and then gets to 'level up' at the nearest graveyard - no items or gold.

However, I tried (without success) to argue that during the resolution of the round, damage is checked to the player BEFORE damage is checked to the monster, thus, the player dies and the quest is not completed.

See page 30.

Monster deaths occur during the Range Strike Step and the Resolution Step.

Character deaths occur during the Damage Step.

It is impossible for a character and monster to die at the same time.

Players can also die during the reroll step from a monster's special ability. If this happens, their dice have no further effect, and they place no tokens. Page 33.
