That worked well. SV is still with us today thanks to Nixon's foresight.
I will say this, my respect for Johnson has increased, he understood how important his words were. And we have them for posterity, it's a shame that we will not have this over Iraq or Libya.

Have no desire to defend Nixon, but it really doesn't matter
what he offered the south.
The north was content to wait the US out and the south felt
they were being thrown to the wolves by LBJ.
LBJ was in charge and he couldn't make it stick. Then Nixon was in
charge and he couldn't make it stick, until he won 72 so convincingly
that the north were spooked that the US was going to stop pissing
around and go after them hard. If 72 had been tight you can bet the
war would have lasted even longer.
The fact is the south was to weak and corrupt to survive the US
pullout, so any president who pulled out had to feel strong enough
politically to sacrifice them.
So watergate ended nixon and ended vietnam.
