Welcome to the E&T Tournament of Champions

This tournament is the culmination of a series of four E&T tournaments played here on BGG. The best players from those tournaments have been invited to this Tournament of Champions.

These tournaments have a very special format. Each tournament features 13 players playing in four games such that every player faces every other player exactly once. Points are awarded for order of finish and then a weighting factor is applied. The weighting factor is designed to account for turn order biases in the game. As you can see from the data below it turns out that E&T favors the first player to the detriment of the others, especially the last (recall that turn order on BGG always goes Lion, Urn, Bow, Goat):

Table: Finishing Position Based on Turn Order (270 games counted)

Icon First Second Third Fourth
Lion 104 61 58 47
Urn 69 69 73 59
Bow 50 72 78 70
Goat 47 68 61 94

As each game is completed points are awarded based on finish order as below:

Table: Points Awarded for Finish Order

Finish Points
1 3
2 2
3 1
4 0

After the points are awarded as above they are modified by a weighting factor. The weighting factor is derived from the data in the first table and a super secret formula:

Table: Weighting Factors per Icon

Icon Weighting Factor
Lion 0.82
Urn 0.97
Bow 1.09
Goat 1.20

For example, if a player finishes one of his games in second place and he is playing as the Bow his score would be as follows: 2 x 1.09 = 2.18

If you are interested you can take a look at the tournaments that led up to the tournament of champions. The top three players from each tournament were automatically qualified for the tournament of champions. One wildcard player was then selected based on the highest tournament score among the non qualifiers.

Marshall and all,

We have a situation in our game;

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/tigris/gamemgr.php?action=viewg...

Essentially, one player made an error, when he did not notice the blue
leader (or thought it was his own), and played two blue tiles that
benefitted another player (me).

Ordinarily we would just continue the game, but considering these are not
ordinary games, we should consider alternatives.

It is early in the game, and I think a restart of the game is a reasonable
alternative.

As the beneficiary of the "extra" points, it was suggested by one of the
fellow players that I could "pay the point(s) back" at some point in the
game. I'm not really as comfortable with that situation, since I'd rather
not have in the back of my head that I have to perform a suboptimal move
sometime during the game.

As the results of this game actually effect more than the participants, I
thought I'd ask others in the tournament their opinions.

Bottom line, would it be ok if we restarted this game?

Eric

I did a similarly stupid mistake by playing a tile as my very first action in the most recently started game. I didn't benefit anyone else, other than losing an action to the field and disrupting the sound positioning of my initial leader placements. Probably just will knock me out of the running in this game without some healthy good fortune, but I figured it was just tough beans.

More to the point: In response to Eric, I don't like the option of trying to "pay back" the extra points, because it does not account for the placement of the tiles that you may or may not have otherwise chosen to play. I'm fine with a restart, but maybe there should be a turn limit (like beyond the 2nd turn or something) where a mistake after that is just tough. Or maybe a zero tolerance rule where if you screw up its your own problem.

But then, what constitutes a restart-eligible mistake? Is my error great enough to warrant it, too? (So I'm hardly a neutral observer.)

As the person who made the mistake, I'm leaning towards continuing as is. I figure it was my mistake. There was no software error, no "trickiness" on anybody else's part, it was 100% my stupidity so it's only fair that I lose the points. The blue goat was sitting there, I was just so ready to grab the treasure that I clicked out the sequence, the only stopped to actually look at the board after my blue score didn't go up like I expect.

I'd like to just continue the game. 2 blue points isn't the end of the world. I'll just have to come up with a devious way to get them back later. devil

If it effected just William and I, I'd be fine to continue, but it also hurts the other players in the game. I'm thinking it isn't very fair to them. It is one thing to make a bad play that helps other players, but an outright mistake, I'm less comfortable with. I don't find it fair to penalize William or my fellow players, and if it turned out to be the difference it would feel unsatisfying...

As a player in that game, I'm fine with it going either way. I've made mistakes and regretted them too. I understand your point efreeman about the nagging feeling that you get sometimes. If Latria is up for it and mdp says so we could restart.

Well, I would prefer just to continue with the game. These things happen. In the first tournament I played in a I played a move that gave a Green point to somebody else, I ended up coming in second.

But if each player PM's me that they want to restart then we'll restart it.

This sums up my point of view.

I don't feel penalized.

Strangely, it feels like eric is penalised because he will not feel satisfied if he wins.

Let's replay.

Also, let's continue our current game. My luck is going great there. But this current game will not count.

I feel like I need to apologize to the other tournament players for my poor play. I've been extremely busy at work and it was a bad idea to enter a tournament just now. I've made several thoughtless moves and I'm afraid I've upset some of the balance of the games. Its a pity because I love this format, but the timing couldn't be worse for me right now. I also apologize if I've made some of the games drag on while people were waiting for me to move.

No need to apologize. At least you didn't screw up badly enough to cause a restart of any of your games. soblue

I'm glad the game ended when it did, I think in the middle game I did well, but towards the end I made a horrible mistake (hung on to three useless black tiles in a war, when I could have tossed them and possibly gotten blues and reds that I desperately needed), and I could see people gaining on me every turn after that.

When I run tournaments on KGS, I find that it is really, really hard to do well. I'm always so worried about the tournament that I never can give my own play the concentration it needs, and I would perform horribly. My answer? I stopped competing in my own tournaments. blush

Marshall, regardless of how you did this tournament, I know you to be a very formidable foe. You creamed almost everyone in tournament #4, and I think you would have beaten me in game #4 had I not been extremely fortunate with some unforeseen turns of events that went my way at the tail end of that game.

You've done a great job running these tournaments and we thank you!

Unless I am reading it wrong, one of the remaining games has both Latria and Koert in it. Could (and perhaps should) be the decider in the tournament!

Anyone got an update of how that game is going?

And MDP: I still fear sitting down across the virtual table from you: the game with you, Koert and Grinningpik had the most anticipation and anxiety in it for me.

And yes, thanks for running all these tournaments, they have been tremendous.
