I would be interested in buying a book on card games (those which can be played with an ordinary deck).

Can anyone recommend a good choice?

For card games only, you can't go wrong with anything by David Parlett. There is a relatively new update to his earlier encyclopedias -- The A to Z of Card Games. It's not listed here on the BGG yet, but it's in-print and easy to find:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0198608705?tag=article-boar...

Supplement that with the two Sid Sackson books, Card Games Around the World and A Gamut of Games; and anything you care to search for over on www.pagat.com, and you'll be pretty much set.

Any of David Parlett's books will be good.

Also check out his website:

It is so good, I have saved copies of his word games and card games web pages onto my smartphone.
