Rule book page 12
"Once a mouse successfully searches, the mouse cannot search that same tile again"

So, does that mean that if a mouse unsuccessfully searches... ie- doesn't roll a star... he can just, umm, search again? And again, until he rolls a star? If so, why are we even rolling?

I don't have the rulebook at hand, but if I remember well searching requires an action. So as long as you keep failing, you are wasting actions (time).

but you're just searching after all the minions are dead, so you have as much time as you want. Can't all the mice just stand there and do dozens of actions/turns before moving on to the next tile?

Searching is an action, you only get one action a turn, if you clear the tile of minions and just remain in the tile searching, at the end of each turn a cheese will be added to the timer, which in turn will cause a surge at some point.

ah... so, basically, once the last minion dies, each mouse that hasn't attacked yet that round gets one 'free' search, and then a cheese is added to the wheel? Then if everyone wants to search again it costs another cheese on the wheel?

I guess it follows then that just moving across an empty room, to get to a door/ladder/whatever to another tile, also adds cheeses?

So, a battle ends, add a cheese to the wheel. Mouse takes 2 turns to get to edge of tile to explore next tile, add 2 more cheeses to the wheel?

Man have we been playing it on easy mode. Thanks for the clarification.

Yep basically the rules state that when the last mouse finishes their turn and there are no minions on the Initiative track add a cheese, then start the next turn.

If you then all search or move and do nothing else and another turn ends add another cheese.

So during a battle it is sometimes worthwhile to try and position a mouse near the exit or flip space, so you don't waste to much time leaving a room.

Would say it is also worthwhile trying to get as many searches as they add nice shiny items or tricks.

Yeah, definitely. Probably still a good idea to roll for searches, even at the expense of adding cheese, especially if you have multiple mice who didn't find anything yet. The found items will probably make up the difference in added wheel cheeses by killing future minions more quickly.

Thanks again.

I would be careful of this. Of course do any free searches that you can, but I feeling adding cheese to the wheel is dangerous.

There is a parabolic growth to the danger of the cheese wheel. If you for example hang out in a room adding say three cheese to the wheel and get a surge then every tile in the rest of game will be one page harder.

Harder pages are more likely to add more cheese to the wheel. More cheese means even harder encounters. Which means more cheese...

There is an interesting decision tree here. If your equipment is lacking or it is early in a chapter taking time to search is good, but if your equipment has already been upgraded then it is often best to hurry through the chapter is fast as you can.

Oh heck... We've been playing that you only get to search once per tile regardless of the result! Guess we've been playing on hard mode!

After the last minion dies, only mice that haven't successfully searched yet and still have a turn on the initiative track can now search as their action.

You don't add cheese as soon as the battle ends, unless the last minion card destroyed was last on the initiative track, you add the cheese after the last mouse on the initiative track has taken it's turn after the minions have been killed.

Ultimately the decision to stick around searching too long after minions are dead is something people have to weigh against how many cheese they are willing to add to the wheel. The more cheese, the quicker a surge comes and besides the minions coming out with the surge, the end marker moves up and you have less time to get through the chapter.

Just for reference, the rule about adding cheese to the wheel when there are no minion initiative cards on the track is on Page 7 of the rulebook under the heading 'Time is Short!'. :^)

Just for reference:

page 7 of the rulebook wrote:
Time is Short! If there are no minions on the board after the last mouse on the initiative track has taken a turn, place 1 cheese token on the minion cheese wheel.  Continue to do this each time the last mouse on the initiative track completes a turn and there are no minions on the board.
so is it worth the risk to keep searching after you've cleared the room? I believe that there's a reason that the section heading is "time is short"

Its a balancing act, which is part of the game.

The choice is all yours.

Remembering that not all items in the search deck are good or relevant.

We try and get some searches in during or before combat if possible.
