I really enjoyed these 2, they remind me of my first experiences in TD's from Warcraft 3 custom maps.

Does anyone know other good ones?

I played this one a lot: http://www.kongregate.com/games/preecep/desktop-tower-defens...
They used to have it available at the developer's site, but that one seems to be down now.

I really didn't care for Defense Grid at all. It just seemed like a dry mathematical excercise of optimizing DPS/$.

I would recommend Revenge of the Titans.

I wouldn't call it dry.

Especially all the challenge modes. i am currently trying to complete all challenge modes available in each level. I've gotten about halfway through but some of them are REALLY hard.

Think about who you're talking to.

Bloons Tower Defense is good early on, but recently they've added a lot of microtransactions that make towers better. They are, of course, attainable in-game, but it gets to the point where some levels can only be beaten by either absolutely perfect tower placement, or spending money.

Defense Grid is fun but just feels off to me. Sort of soulless. Or something. I don't know what it is about it that bothers me.

Of course, if you don't care if the game you're playing is difficult at all, Plants vs. Zombies is pseudo-tower defense and wonderful and cute. But it isn't difficult at all.

I have one for my iPad called Kingdom Rush that was fun, but like so many others it left the world of "Pay $0.99 for the game" to "It's free! And by the way we've amped up the difficulty but don't worry here's some microtransactions..." So I stopped playing it.

I've put more time than expected into http://armorgames.com/play/10317/gemcraft-labyrinth

It seems to have quite a bit of content and replayability, even though I'm not sure it has an achievable end (it's got a LOT of content...).

There are certainly ways to accelerate things and expand the game with a premium edition, but so far, the base game hasn't felt too limiting or restrictive... but it may get to that point at the highest levels? (I'd say I'm about halfway through...?)

Theme-wise and story-wise, it's very basic and generic, but most free tower defense is one way or another.

I would be a fan of these if it was just tower defense but I'm not a fan of the shooter aspect added in.

Oh, are you guys talking about the Puppy Games one?
I really like the looks of it, but I guess I'm not as much a fan of the genre as of the aesthetics. I really loved their Droid Assault game(not tower defensey, more 2D shootey-robot-possessey).

I really loved Rampart!
I used to play it a lot with friends. That version is kinda weak on the graphical department, though. Here is a PC version. I actually never thought of it as Tower Defense, but it makes sense.

I'm trying to think of one that I played around 1990. I thought it was called Castles. It was like you build a castle and it should this picture of you as this white bearded king in a white beard and crown and red robe or if female a red dress with big bosoms and crown. But you build your castle and then people attack it. And the game just keep going like that I think. I know there is a game called castles and I looked it up and it just doesn't seem like what I remember. Especially the red-glad king/queen.

It had defense, but also kingdom management and maybe some resource building too. Maybe it was more like sim city instead but the getting attacked part seemed a little bit of tower defense.

I DO remember Rampart.
