It's only just being confirmed that the cause was in fact the detonation of explosive devices, I daresay it's far too early to speculate about who is responsible.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in Boston.

I think they are saying 3 dead now, and a couple dozen injuries, including lots of amputations.

Bombs in the U.S. bother me more than in Israel, I expect it here but want the U.S. to be safe as it usually is, or used to be. I'm from California but of course know people in Boston.

Hoping for no further attacks.

It's never too early to speculate on who is responsible. It's also been quite awhile now since the bombs were confirmed as IEDs and the search for others was initiated. Given the concurrency with the bombings across Iraq, I'm going to buy the box in the pool labeled "Al Qaeda" and hope for the best.

It was bound to happen eventually, but it's tragic nonetheless. Kudos to the vigilance of those who have worked to prevent countless previous attempts, and sympathies to those unfortunate enough to be nearby.

Unfortunately, I doubt that there is any way to completely shut this sort of thing down. Doubly unfortunately is that this will turn into another security-driven power grab. Soon, we'll be as bad as Great Britain.

In what way does this not apply to every member of Al Qaeda?

Because they have a motive beyond that

People who do horrific things generally have a motive for doing them. It doesn't make them any less nuts.

Whoever it was wasn't all that bright if looking to inflict the most damage. When the bombs went off, the race was all but over and was in the clean up/straggler stage. If someone had wanted to inflict mass casualties, they should have set them off a couple of hours earlier. Anyone who had studied marathons and in particular Boston which tends to be faster than many (b/c the runners have to meet a minimum time to even get into the field), would have known that.

There's been conflicting reports about that one and it may just have been an unrelated electrical fire.

I posted, and rapidly deleted, a rebuttal to this. It's not the time. I will just mention that it included what experience has shown is the best thing to do in these circumstances: Keep Calm and Carry On.

The JFK Library explosion was a mechanical fire, per the library staff.

Passed the library on my way home - from afar it looked like it had burn damage - but Gov Patrick directly linked it to the bombs, so don't know about that.

I can't wait until this Saudi suspect supposedly in custody turns out just to be an angry Tea Partier trying to get an extension on his tax return.

if attacking the Marathon, why 3 hours aftyer the winners crossed the line?

2 hours after first finish is the most crowded swell.

Three hours probably has the largest number of people standing around.

Its pretty well timed if going for mass.

Boston PD is denying that they're holding a suspect.

What does that tell us about likely suspects? Thats NOT an Al Qaeda type target, it seems purely symbolic so I'd say definitely homegrown

I know the police were detonating suspect packages - was the JFK Library one of those?

EDIT: Never mind, it wasn't a police detonation. They're not sure it was related to the other two, but it seems likely. No injuries from that one.

Might have had problems with cellular reception at height of it all. They've now cut cellular reception around the area apparently to hinder more remote triggers.

No, at the press conf. they reported three explosions of which one was contained detonation and that was another one on Copley Square - the JFK was not reported by the Gov as a contained one.
