Introduction:

This is my first session of WiF. The version we play is 5th edition, Fascist Tide and its entirely PBEM (Cyberboard) wich will probably result in a long playtime. This report is strictly from my point of view and how I experience the war that goes on. As I write my posts dont be afraid to give me a few tips n´tricks on how to beat my opponent...(Hope he doesnt read this )

So it begins. I choose Allied/Russia (since I thought if I play bad it would be a longer game than if I had taken Germany robot Ill just shortly mention my setup. I had no idea how to place my units since I had never played it nor seen it played. With Russia I thought I would try to spread out along the western border to try stall an early German invasion. Yet I placed 1 ARM ,1 CAV, 1 TAC, 1 HQ and a paratrooper on the border to Persia. With France I didnt have much choice than to bulk up on the borders and the main part of my fleet in Marseille. CW was alot more difficult. I figured I would start out with sending 1 or 2 more troops to Africa and then the rest to support France. Leaving 2 units in UK for local defense. US didnt have much choicees where to place.

So the first impulse started sep/oct -39. My Polish setup was planned to have a strong Warsaw defense and then scattered units around the capital to try stall the german offense as much as possible. Germany made a few cautious high odds attacks on my polish forces (7-1) and started to move closer to Warsaw. Italy remained silent, only sending a few subs through Gibraltar to the Atlantic and shipping more troops to Tobruk.

2nd impulse, my turn to move. So many troops and no idea what to do...But I decided to make my Russian attack on Persia. Plan was that if I fail and makes big mistakes its better to do it against Persia who only got 1 CAV than against a bigger opponent. So I started to move into the mountains where the Persian CAV had positioned itself. In a combined TAC/ARM/PARA attack and a lucky dice I manage to destroy it and even get a breakthrough leaving Persia defenseless. Yeah I know its an easy target but hey, this was my first attack EVER in WiF. Since I did so well here I decided to make an attack with France also agaisnt the rather weak german western front (for now). I think I did a big mistake here cause I had an ARM very close wich I could have moved up into the attack. What happened now was that I made a 4-1 attack but didnt get to choose CRT so an assault attack gave me 1/1 losses. It wasnt catastrophe but not very good either. I also decided to transport an INF from Algeria to Marseille to build up a better defense. CW transported units to France (Le Havre and Calais).

3rd impulse and Germanys 2nd move. Once more a few high odds attack on the polish defenses leaving Warsaw almost completely surrounded. In the west germany moved up a replacement unit in the hole I made in last impulse. Italy moved up more troops and air to the french border. Guess he is building strength to kill France in one swift blow.

4th impulse Russia advances into Teheran and secures Persia as a province. I also start to send the troops to the Polish border where I also declared control of the Baltic States, Bessarabia and eastern parts of Poland. In France I had an HQ reorganise the units that attacked in last impulse. I also moved all available French fleets to the Western Meds. CW moved the troops they had in france to the Belgium border. In Egypt I moved the ARM and HQ I got stationed there into the first desert hex. But when I start to think of it now I have no other ground units here so if Italy tries a landing behind me I am in a bad situation. Think Ill move back into Alexandria next impulse. Ofcourse I have a big fleet to send out....But those dont help on ground units. CW also sent a fleet to the Atlantic to follow the italian subs that moved there.

5th impulse I havent looked at this file yet but rumours says Warsaw has fallen. Ill get back later when I know more.

See you soon and wish me luck!

Yes it was true. Poland fell in the 5th impulse. They didnt manage to kill a single German units. But atleast it took them 3 impulses to get to Warsaw wich I guess Ill have to be satisfied with. Germany also sends 2 subs into the North Atlantic. Besides that not much happens.

In the 6th Impulse I move up more french troops to the French/German border and brings home an INF from Lebanon-Syria. A CW fleet follows the German subs into the North Atlantic. CW also moves a few air units to France. In the east Russia keeps moving the Persian attackforce back to the west and places it along the German-Russo partition line. Right now I am more or less just waiting for something to happen. Germany is moving lots of troop to the west so I guess an attack from them is soon to come. But where? Can he break through the Maginot line or does he have to attack through Benelux? Guess I will see soon enough. Italy is also a pain since they dont do anything. Still I must guard their every move to try and figure out what they plan to do.

In the 7th Impulse Germany attacks Netherlands and keeps moving troops to the West. The single Dutch INF positioned just east of the capital manages to stop the German advance against Amsterdam by forcing them to stop in its ZOC. The attack that then takes place ends in an exchange in units. 1 Dutch vs. 1 German INF. Not bad at all.

8th Impulse, end of turn and my turn to move. Not much happens here except that I manage to use the Dutch transport to move a British INF into Amsterdam to try and stall the Germans. France as completely left its colonies to bulk up forces in France. The Italians has got a lot of forces on the French/Italian border so I guess its only a matter of time. The good thing in this impulse was that it ended. I rolled a 2 on the dice and thats what was needed. So now we go into Nov/Dec turn. US Entry still at 0.

Nov/Dec 1939 and the 1st Impulse the germans keeps moving troops to the west. Still leaving a few infantry on the border to Russia. They make an attack on the CW INF in Amsterdam who fights hard and the result is a 2/1. Netherlands has costed germany 3 units so it hasnt been that bad. Although a CW INF also were lost...

2nd Impulseand my turn. I am still passive. Russia moves troops up along German/Russo border, trying to place them as good as possible using rivers as natural defenses. I ship a DIV to Egypt to get more units there since Italy got a lot of INF in and around Tobruk. I also prepare with TRS in northern france to be able to take my CW units out of there ASAP if all goes wrong. US occupies Iceland, US entry option 3.

In the 3rd and 4th Impulse nothing much happens. Germany got numerous troops on the French/Belgium border. I decide to let Russia try to occupy Iraq so I start sending troops down to the Persian-Iraqi border. I move a DIV to Khartoum to try wash out the italians in Adis Abeba with the help of SA INF.

In the 5th Impulse Germany strikes down at Belgium and the small country is easily overrun. Leaving nothing but a thin red line between France and Germany. I need to make up a plan fast for the defense of the french soil. 6th impulsestarts and all I do is more preparations. On the 7th impulse it happens. German troops attack in two places with ARM, INF and TAC escorted by FTR. I send in my noble fighters in a desperate attempt to stall them. Somehow I manage to shoot down a 6 factor german FTR and the luck was just about started. In the northern attack I only loose 1 unit, the germans 1. In the southern attack I loose 1 INF in Maginotline but the Germans 2. A glorious day I must say. Most german troops are also turned over so I have get time to reorganise. 8th impulseI dedicate to fill the holes in my defenselines. Hoping to perhaps be able to counter attack while the germans are turned over. But I will not risk low odds attacks. In Persia russian troops are ready to advance as soon as the new year starts. The turn keeps going and next impulse will be the 9th.

Situation in France in the last months of 1939.

In the 9th Impulsethe germans dosnt do much at all since most of its units are turned over. Also the turn ends robbing me from a much needed impulse. No coups occur and US entry rises to 5 due to a good draw from the US entry chits (6). Also the French CV Bearn are interned by the US and placed in their Construction Pool. Russia focus on producing INF and so does France. Hope they get the chance to place them.....CW builds NAV, FTR and Home Guards.

Ok, a new year.

1940 Jan/Feb starts with Mud all over Europe. In the 1st Impulse Germany performs 2 attacks. 1 on the French armor in Belgium (look at picture above) and one attack on Metz in the Maginot Line. I have a 5-3 INF there. But before the attacks Germany tries to make a Ground Strike so I send in a FTR to intercept and so does Germany. THe result is another glorius victory for the French Airforce killing its 2nd german air. My opponent chooses the TAC and aborts his FTR. Then he sends in new air units to make a Ground Support, 3 TAC, 1 STR and 3 FTR. I counter with all I got, 1 FTR and 2 TAC. The final result is that we both get a bomber through. My 2nd bomber is aborted but I manage to shoot down 1 FTR and 1 STR from my enemy. The kill count in the air so far is 0 French and 4 German air units. A total success so far. The land battle results in a 1/2 so I loose Metz to Germany and taking only 1 enemy INF with me. Still I am satisfid with the result.

In the 2nd Impulse and my turn I conduct only Naval with CW since I need to try to protect my CONV pipes. France makes a combined and only move up a few more INF to try and hold the defense line. I leave my units in the Maginot to try and stall the other german INF inside Germany. Since its mud the Impulse marker moves up to the 7th Impulse. Good for me angry

7th Impulse and Germany keeps pushing west, both in Maginotline and east of Rheims. Its getting hard to keep the defenseline stable. Its probably only the mud that keeps the germans from blitzing through my lines. 8th Impulse , I have decided to let CW try a counterattack. With support from both shorebombardment and ground strikes I should be able to take out the single german INF occupying Amsterdam. It wont win me the war but it would feel good to atleast manage to take out one enemy unit. The attack started out bad since I lost a CW FTR in air combatwent so I had to send my TAC home. The ground attack went better and I sent the german INF to the force pool The bad thing is that the turn didnt end and my french defenses are truly weak now.

12th Impulse. The turn ends in disaster for the CW fleet. Germany makes a naval attack with its NAV and shoots the battleship Nelson into pieces sending both crew and ship to the cold bottom of the North Sea. The rest of my fleet retreats into Scapa Flow. In France german troops attack Petain and the units he is stacked with. The battle ends in 1/1 with Petain sent to Force pool. Doubt he will ever return to fight again.

End of Turn and US decided to give 2 destroyers to CW. But it lowered the US Entry to 4. Now all I hope for is to win initiative so I can retreat my french forces up around Paris.

France 1940. End of February.

Just a note, the French actually only aborted the German fighter, but he did kill the Strategic Bomber. But still, the Luftwaffe has been dismal in its air to air combat.

March/April 1940 and 1st Impulse. Bad News : Clear weather. Good News: I win initiatve. Since I won initiative I manage to withdraw my French forces to a better position. No attacks what so ever since I need every single unit to defend Paris. CW makes a Naval Action, shipping FTR and a canadian INF to Gibraltar. Russia attacks and occupies Iraq, securing its resources. 2nd Impulse and now Germany makes a full frontal assault using its Offensive Chit to destroy my defenses. In 2 out of 3 hexes they manage to wipe me. In the 3rd attack I stop them with the help of french TACs. In the 3rd Impulse I had a 1 in 6 chance to end the turn but then again, had I failed I would be totally run over. So I decide to retreat to new positions. Now I dont have many other options. I will not be able to retreat anymore. ALl I can hope for now is to survive the next impulse and then try to end the turn.

The French positions at the end of 3rd Impulse. No Schliefen plan. He pushed straith through the Maginot.

Thanks alot, appreciate that . Here comes the rest of this turn...

4th Impulse and now my defenses totally collapse. Germany runs me over and pushes me back to Paris. Italy declares war on the allied and attacks the weak southern front. All my units except 1 in Marseille have been sent north. Marseille falls and in Libya/Egypt italian units crosses the border. I desperetly try to defend myself and in the 5th impulse I decide to make a counter attack south of France. Seeing Manstein and an exhausted German INF I move in for an attack. Unfortunately the french attack is badly coordinated and a roll of 1 kills 2 of my units. I still think it was worth a shot though, a 6 had killed both German units...The CW HQ Gort and an INF withdraws to the safety of Newcastle. In Italian East Africa units from British East Africa and Sudan makes a successfull attack on Italian East Africa and occupies it. The turns 5th Impulse startswith another massive German attack in France, Paris becomes almost encircled but they dont have the power to take it yet. In the North Sea german NAV makes another successfull attack , sending a CW LS to the bottom. In the 6th Impulse I decide to try to end the turn and having France live another few months so I pass on all my nations. I needed a 3 on my dice and with a bit luck I pull it off. During the End of Turn Segments French Subs manage to sink an Italian CONV.

France, End of April 1940.

May/June 1940 and Germany wins the Initiative. Just a few comments on the reinforcement segment. France had almost no Build Points so I had them build a HQ, De Gaulle. And I placed it in Brest. I had also forgotten to retreat a unit in Egypt leaving Alexander HQ open to Italian attacks. However The 1st impulse doesnt start to bad. A fullscale attack on Paris by German forces results in 2 German INF lost and 1 French HQ. Couldnt been better (or worse). The result is that Paris is still a free city. In Egypt Italians assault Alexander HQ but he goes out with a blast taking an italian INF with him and preventing 2 CW units beeing cut of from supply. My move and 2nd Impulse. Russia just keeps organizing its defenses for the inevitable German attack. France sends its fleet into the Meds and Bay of Biscay in an effort to evacuate De Gaulle. CW withdraws its last units in France to Cherbourg in a desperate attempt to avoid annihilation. CW transports a FTR and a Canadian INF from Gib to Alexandria who then participate in a counterattack on Cavallero HQ and the INF its stacked with. CW Fleets in Eastern Med also support the attack with shore bombardment. With an overwhelming force the allied attack at 5-1 odds but are stopped blood cold by italian forces. Cavllero HQ is lost and with it a New Zealand Corps. Paris falls in the 3rd Impulse but not without german casualties. They loose 1 INF and a FTR squadron is also shot down. I actually have lost count on how many air the french pilots have taken out. But thats all history now. The attack also left every units involved turned over so now Germany doesnt have many unittts left to act with. 4th Impulse is almost to silent. CW got 2 INF out of supply units in Cherbourg who I hope will survive a few more moves so I can bring them out. Russia keeps working on its defenses. It actually feels as if I only move heir units back and forth. No idea how to place them for best effect. Guess Ill know if its good or bad within time. 5th Impulse - 13th Impulseis mostly troop movements. In Egypt an Italian attack results in me loosing my ARM(or) there. Fortunately the italians are turned over. Other than that not much happens. My 2 INF in Cherbourg are in a dire situation but I cant do much about it. End of Turn, France is overrun and Germany makes a complete conquer so there is no Vichy. The only surviving unit (except navals) is De Gaulle. But the French should be proud cause they did a great job. Both on land and in air. The bulk of French navy joined the allied. 1 HS turned to the Dark Side of the Italian Force and set sail for Naples. Now we go into July/August 1940.

July/August 1940. I will not comment every Impulse in this turn since it didnt have much action. I had to leave my 2 INF in Cherbourg to its fate. I did not want to sacrifice a TRS to get them out. German forces flushed them into the Unit tray in the 2nd Impulse. In Africa I managed to shoot down an Italian TAC trying to Ground Strike my INF. Thats pretty much what happened, except German forces rushing towards the Russian Front, preparing for what might come... In the End Turn US managed to gear up. They are at 9 on the US Entry now. 2 French Subs also managed to sink an Italian convoy in the Western Meds.

The rather direful situation in North Africa, end of August 1940

September/October 1940 and the weather is clear. The first 3 impulses contain nothing but troop movements. In the 4th Impulse I decide to try to put some pressure on the Italian Navy in the central Mediterranean. But my Task Force steaming from Alexandria is intercepted and my CV Glorious is damaged by italian bombers. The mission is aborted and all ships goes back to port. All but Glorious who where sent to be repaired. cry

5th and 6th Impulse sees little action. Italian units move into Tunisia wich is still CW but unoccupied. The situation in Egypt has stabilized. No side attacks. The turn ends however and we go into the two last months of the year.

November/December 1940 will be a short turn. Winter and Mud in all Europe. 1st Impulse starts with Germany sending air into the Meds, North Sea and Bay of Biscay. Other than that not much happens. 2nd Impulse and my move. I need to get more troops to Africa so I send Montgomery alone on a TRS, escorted by 2 LS through Bay of Biscay. After Air to Air combat and Naval Air the result is 1 FTR lost each and my Naval units aborts down to Gibraltar. A success after all since I manage to pull a NAV into Bay of Biscay that could have attacked my Navals that I plan to send into the Western Meds. I also move up more FTR close to Bay of Biscay. 7th Impulse and Germany sends his NAV in Bay of Biscay home in fear om CW FTRs. He also sends more ground units to Tunisia by air transport. 8th Impulse starts out as a Naval action for CW. I need to get two French naval units out of Algeria so I send my whole Gibraltar Task Force into the Western Meds. It contains 3 CVs, 2 HS and 4 LS. After air to air combat one German bomber clears through and manages to damage a LS for CW. But in next batle round I abort it and I can later send the two French units to patrol missions in the Atlantics. I also send 2 French subs to stalk the Central Mediteranean.

Ok, the war is about to start up again. I've had time to think about my upcoming moves. I have decided to retreat slowly in Western Africa. If I can get US to enter soon the ports there can give them a jumping start. Regarding Russia I have great fear. I've done a few simulations on the upcoming battle and always end up overrun. Trading ground for time is also difficult since it takes alot of units to stall the German warmachine. The one thing that can really help me is bad weather. Since Italy has grown fairly strong I think an early US entry will have enough to do with fighting in Africa and cant help Russia for great many months. 1941 will be a tough year..... angry

January/Februari 1941. 1st Impulse.

With Colonel Mud and General Winter covering Europe, Germany sticks to moving more units to the east. Poland is more than crowded right now. They send air patrolling most of the Meds. 2nd Impuse and Allied turn is also without much action. Reinforcements are sent to Morocco and Escorts to protect CONV are comitted. In the 7th Impulse Italy moves 5 LS into Central Meds. Other than that ...nothing. However in the 8th Impulse CW decides to move into the Western Meds. In attempt to break the Status Quo in Africa I need to try to gain better access to the sea. And to do that I need to take on the Axis airforce. I send in 4 CV, 3 HS and 2 LS. Germany, already with one TAC in the sea area sends in 2 more TAC and a NAV. All escorted by 1 Italian FTR and 2 German FTR. CW sends in 2 FTR to help protect the weaker CVs and to be used as front airs. I decide to not use one of my CV so only 3 CVs are used as FTRs. So on Axis side we have 3 FTR, 3 TAC and 1 NAV. Allied got 2 FTRs and 3 CVs. After a long and hard air battle 2 Axis FTRs and 2 TACs are shot down together with 1 Canadian FTR. 4 air less in the Meds makes a big difference (I hope)....

The last things that happened in the turn before it ended was that I made a port attack with Ark Royal (the 4th CV) on Naples. The result was a damaged LS. Now off to March/April.

March/April 1941. Europe got clear weather everywhere except in the arctic weather zone thats got mud. The result is that Germany will have to wait for better weather before they attack Russia. The first 3 Impulses contains nothing but troop movements. But in the 4th Impulse I do the same move with CW as I did last turn. I send in my huge CV fleet into the Western Med to try and take out more german air. CW got 2 FTR and 4 CV fighting and Germany got 2 FTR and 3 bombers. The Battle results in one FTR shot down each and all bombers aborted. I leave my fleet in the Western Meds prepared to support my units on the ground. In Algeria, east of Algiers De Gaulle attacks with an INF and an ARM supported by my fleet two enemy INF. I get a B* result (3-1) leaving the ground open but I dare not to advance since a german ARM and an Italian MTN is close also. the 5th Impulse and Germany keeps moving troops on the eastern front. Italy sends a TRS and a LS through the Central Med with an INF. CW Submarines intercepts but the italians manage to slip through and to damage one of the subs.

In the End of Turn Segmentthe Germans manage to sink one of the CW CONV in Denmark Strait, and the US entry goes back to 13 from 14. Disaster!!!

With clear weather comes trouble. 1st Impulse and Germany declares war on Russia and suprises most of the russian forces. Unfortunately I have made some poor deployement and half of the Russian HQs are flipped from Ground Strikes. My first defenseline is wiped out instantly. Only around Odessa I manage to flip the Germans that advance into the city. I loose Odessa, Brest-Litovsk and Kaunas.

2nd Impulse and I have no chance of counterattacking so I retreat, reorganise and tries to get into better defense positions.

3rd Impulse and Germany keeps pushing. I can put up no resistance at all. Vilna and Riga falls. German forces are just west of Kiev, Minsk and Dnepropetrovsk.

4th Impulse and a bold plan is forming in my head. I see an opening in Helsinki. Only 1 german INF and I can land 1 INF by amphibious assault and send in paratroopers. In the Ground Strike phase Russian FTRs shoot the Finnish FTR down and I flip the german INF with my TAC. Together with Shore Bombardment, Ground Support by TAC and my land attacks I get up to 2-1 on Assault CRT with a +1 mod. That ment I would make the attack as long as I didnt't roll a 1 on the D6. Totally worth it. BUT the dices where on German side and I failed the attack. Another disaster....In Africa I manage to assault the Italian defenses, sending 1 enemy INF to the force pool.

5th Impulse and Germany assault and take Minsk and advance up next to Kiev and Dnepropetrovsk meaning I have lost all ground west of Dvinsk and Dvina river except those cities.

6th Impulse coming and I cant do anything about it. Was planning to try a pass but I need to move away a few units to avoid complete encirclement.

7th Impulse, Germany attacks and takes Kiev, crosses Dvina in Latvia. Russians fleeing for their pityful lifes. Atleast those that are still alive.

8th Impulse and I move a few units into cities. The only good thing is that the turn ends. Although I now know that nex turn will be pure pain. Pain....

In the end of turn segment the Russian production rockets to 21 build points but I fear its to late. The US entry goes back to 12, still 16 to go. The next few turns will decide the outcome of the war.

July/August 1941 and Germany keeps pushing east. There are 3 main Army Groups commanded by Rommel, Guderian and Manstein. In the North Rommel takes Riga and thrusts all the way passed Lake Peipus. In the Center Guderian is about to encircle Smolensk. Stopped only briefly by russian forces that cuts their supply. But the threat is quickly handled with. In the South Mansteins assault on Dnepropetrovsk fails and his armored spear heading for Tula is cut of from supply leaving the bulk of the army useless for several weeks. Rumanian reserve units have to rush forward and open the supply lines again.
