Stop polluting Threads!!!, with, ohh! you spelled that wrong, or your comma, was in the wrong spot! or you used that word out of context. Do people have enough time on their hands to make sure you are spelling something right?, Also they have no input on a thread you post other than your error,s?

To me it's an "annoyince"!!!!!!

Rant over!. Or is it?.

It's also basic impoliteness that was common knowledge long before computers and the Internet.

It's annoying to me when people can't spell words or follow grammar rules that they should have learned in fourth grade.

I usually don't make a fuss about it on forums and article comments, though. What really bugs me is when instructors or colleagues send e-mails with its/it's or there/their/they're used incorrectly.

When I was in college the first time, the university newspaper published an article with a headline worded something like "Local high schools lagging in spelling and grammer". Then a month later, they made the same mistake!

A friend of a friend worked for the paper. It was not a good day at the office the second time they made the mistake, she told me.

You are, of course, correct. If you feel it necessary to correct someone's spelling or grammar, you should at least attempt to make your comment funny.

Maybe there needs to be a "Spelling & Grammar Shaming Thread" where people can post that kind of stuff, keeping it out of the threads and then everyone else will know where the assholes all post.

You can usually tell these by their better than average spelling and grammar.

Best comment ever on this I read was a newspaper column by a guy in Britain. He said if there was a headline in the newspaper "Thousands Perish in Turkish Earthqquake" the people who view themselves as spelling police would be more bothered by the extra Q in the headline than by the loss of human life.

I thought this was going to be a handy one-stop-shop list of threads giving me hints about how to reduce my environmental impact. Ah well, maybe next time.

Probably should have been a geek list anyway...

Wait that was when we started with English classes in school (age 10), of course I did know what press play on tape meant long before that.

I make tons of spelling mistakes, often not because I don't know better, but because I don't pay much attention to it. That was the reason why I got average/bad grades in languages in school, and it hasn't changes much since then. I know it sometimes hurts to read 'they're' instead of 'their' but language is communication and as long as we understand each other it's fine. This is just an online forum, not a piece of literature after all.

That being said, I don't mind being corrected. When learning a foreign language, it's a great help if people take their time to point out your mistakes. Otherwise you'll make the same mistakes over and over again.

People just freak out like that all the time. Wouldn't it be because they always need to get the last word to look more creditable!

Umm...you might want to correct yourself. Wouldn't that last sentence be a question? Maybe it is time you learned about how to properly use puncuation.

And that, Mr. Demondude777, would be me getting the last word!
