What's so great about it?

It's more a mini game and less what people think of as a war game, but I'd still call it a war game.
Go to www.wingsofwar.org if you want dedicated forums for it.

My FLGS has had a few discounted copies of the two player starter set and other pieces. I too have been wondering what type of game it is. Is it worth a purchase?

I would highly recommend Down in Flames by DVG or GMT as a better alternative for a heavier game. The gameplay is still tactical in nature, but with movement abstracted by cards and maneuvering. It has a campaign option which turns it into a longer, more strategic game.

Down in Flames: Aces High or Down in Flames: WWII-Guns Blazing are easy starters for that.
I think Wings of War/Glory are good too, but I wanted to post an alternative.

I found DiF to be basically a game of "war" with a slight layer of complexity thrown on top. Wings of War is one of my favorite games...it's great fun for a group and you can add as much complexity to it as you like.
