It depends on the strategy that I'm pursuing. I usually get at least 1 extra worker, but I'll get all of them depending on what I'm doing and how the game goes...

As with all things Tzolkin - it depends.

If you got some ways to feed them due to startup tiles - right away.

Mostly 4 workers, but it does depend - sometimes 6, sometimes 3...

I prefer 5 or 6. I usually don't have problems feeding, but I need to tinker my strategy to start scoring in the nineties consistently.

I almost never take any extra worker.I keep three (and I can win the game!)
The only exception is when one of them is fed with a startup tile. Then, I go immediately to have one extra.
In this case, I follow the skull strategy. There is always one of the worker on the blue wheel, for up to 10 or 12 points. With the three others, I manage to make me progress in the temples.

But usually, I do not feel the need to have more than 3.

It depends on which strategy I'm pursuing, but in Big Corn I like to get the 4th worker ASAP (preferably on a starting tile).
Then pickup a 5th soon after the second food day to drop and leave on Chicken Pizza. I let him ride it as high as possible to use the skull I get from the temple reward on the third food day.

As demonstrated here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/960338/one-game

I used to always try have at least 4.

Now I stick with 3 unless
1) on my first turn Uxmal is empty and I can place 3 workers there or
2) early in the 1st quarter I can place a worker directly on Uxmal 2.

I now favor the 1st turn 3 workers on Uxmal opening move if free and I have enough corn.

I played for my first time recently, and only got 4 workers. I now want my next couple of games to go very heavy on the workers. It just seems like if I can place more workers, I'll get more points. We shall see!
