The aim of the game is to form a square with 9 balls of your colour (see diagrams 2, 3 and 4) and when the final push is made it is a ball of this colour which rolls into the outside position.

Place 25 of the 26 balls on the "Push" board as shown in diagram 1. The players decide who will start. The first player has all the yellow balls and the other all the black ones. The first player takes the remaining yellow ball and places it in one of the "push" positions marked 0-9. With this ball the player proceeds to push the 5 balls in that row one place forward. The end ball in that row will then drop out into an unnumbered position. The ball that was pushed out is then used for the next "push" from any one of the 10 numbered positions. The player continues as long as balls of the same colour are pushed out. If, however, a ball of the other player rolls into the outside position it becomes the other player's turn to "push."

If there are 5 balls of the same colour in one row a "push" with a ball of this colour does not alter the formation and is therefore not allowed.

Diagrams 2, 3 and 4 show examples of a winning formation, black having formed a square. To achieve this position in practice there would always be 3 other black balls elsewhere on the "Push" board. Conversely, if this situation were reversed, yellow would be the winner.

It is recommended that players take alternate turns to start each game.

VARIATIONS:

A simplified version of the game can be played if when forming a square the colour of the last ball pushed out is disregarded.

An even more challenging game would be to form a rectangle of 12 balls of the same colour. See diagram 5.

Instructions for a solo version of "Push" will be found under the "Push" board.

X=black, 0=yellow

Solo version

Set the Push board up as in diagram 1 of the main rules. Then, by pushing from the numbered positions, attempt to create one of the layouts shown in diagrams 6-19 below. For example Diagram 6 can be solved in seven moves: 9-7-7-1-9-6-8.

X0X0X | 0X0X0 | X000X | 0XXX0 | XX0XX | 00X00 | 00X00

These illustrations are suggestions. Many more can be devised.
