(thumbsups appreciated!)

(who wanted their membership card last time? gm me!)

The post-Ludo-Saturday edition.

Cangames 2013 is but 25 short days away! It runs 17-19 May at the illustrious Rideau Curling Club. www.cangames.ca Kanata Board Gamers are running open gaming again this year. I'd like some volunteers (2 Saturday and 2 Sunday). Remember there is no fee that day if you are helping and you get a voucher! Let me know if you are interested!

Also this is a good time to renew your membership with the Kanata Board Gamers as the money helps support Cangames kids games.

There will be a meeting of the Kanata Board Gamers this Thursday, 25 April 2013. The start time for the session is 6 PM till approximately 11pm.

The place is: Kanata Community Christian Reformed Church
Detailed directions follow, but it is quite close to the Hazeldean Public Library.

Also, send me a geekmail if you want to let me know about anything - from suggestions for raising club attendance, club purchase suggestions, or just telling me whether you can make the meeting.

Feel free to use this forum thread to discuss what to play!

You may bring food & drink (be neat!). We can rearrange the tables & chairs provided we return everything an keep things tidy.

Our meetings are posted on meetup; check out http://meetup.gamesforall.ca/

Kanata Community Christian Reformed Church (KCCRC) is 46 Castlefrank Rd (directions follow). There is parking outside. Follow the signs to the church basement.

I will be collecting $2.50 from each person. The first $20 collected is donated to our gracious venue. Any left over will go into a boardgame library fund. Maybe we'll have enough for some 2013 Essen picks? The war chest stands at $426.18. Check out the library (BGG user: KanataBoardGamers). Members can borrow from the library any time. Borrow it one session, bring it back for the next!

Visitors are always welcome. Come on in and check us out! There is no obligation, but if you decide to become a member it only costs $7.50 and entitles you to 10% discount cards at select local games stores.

Note if you want the discount cards (for Fandom II, Toys on Fire, and Comic Book Shoppe), let me know & I'll have them made up. 100% of the $7.50 fee goes to Can Games to support kids games and the cards are good for 1 calendar year from the month you get them. You have donated $53 so far.

Please add to this thread with your suggestions of what to play.

Hope to see you then!

I'd be up for playing Mage Wars Arena for sure! I can only get there by 6:30 at the earliest however, more like 7:00 being realistic.

I can bring/teach any of the following:
A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition)
Spartacus: A Game of Blood & Treachery
Mage Knight Board Game

Dave and I could kill some time playing Android: Netrunner and/or Star Wars: The Card Game while we wait for you to show up.

Aside from those, Spartacus: A Game of Blood & Treachery and Axis & Allies: 1942 pique my interest.

played 5p LasVegas. I agree that 4p is better, but 5p was fun as well.

then played a game of Mage Wars with Halden. Early on he was pressing hard and my Warlord was at half health. Quicksand nailed down his pet and I was able to comeback with a small army of minions to crush his Beast Master.

Good turnout, 15 in attendance. Three member renewals garnered.

(Don't forget to volunteer for CanGames!)

Well that was fun. Started out with a hand of Haggis with Remy, Dave V-H and myself. I think Dave took it.Then people started arriving.

To fill some time before the main event, Remy taught us Wild Fun West. It is a club game and I'd never played before. We had 7 players and quite a lot of auctions (hey-it's what the game is all about). Remy was the victor altho' Dan was close. Mike H made some tremendous bids for town buildings and was a true man of the chruch. At the end I had not a single objective building in town.

Next we broke into two groups: Remy, Dan and Dave (not VH) were off to play The Castles of Burgundy. How'd it go guys? Meanwhile I stuck around with Scott and Jonathan to play Navegador. Scott was spared playing 3 handed Navegador because Kurt and Rod joined fresh from the cyber tunnels (how was Android: Netrunner btw?). Scott explained things very well and altho' Jonathan had read the rules, only Scott & I had played before. Scott got a double colony early on and got the old gold economy going. Jonathan seemed to specialise in shipyards tho' Kurt challenged him on that. Kurt went for churches while Rod focused on colonies. I was the explorer... or is it the ex-poorer? In the end Scott pulled off a spectacular finish which featured over 10 factories! After this we all finished in the 70s or so and altho' I pulled in last, did enjoy the game as always!

For the last game we started a game of Tichu. Jonathan who had not played was my partner and Mike H. (also a first time player -- he says) teamed with Kurt. Mike had to go after a few hands and was replaced by Eric. We didn't finish but oh, that last hand looked like a tichu made for us, tichu borked for them, 1-2 game changer!

I'd like to know what else got played? Dave, Dave VH, Al, Wayne, David, Julien, Mike, Halden, Remy, Eric?

Ok, that must have seemed like 'I'll bring this game I know I can beat some newbs at'. To be honest, I realized that was my 4th play not my 3rd but I was very lucky in the early game with the cheap double gold colony and also with my position at the table giving me good gold prices. I will, however, take credit for jumping on the sugar factories when 3 other players had sugar colonies

I didn't check this forum beforehand or I would have replied to Andrew about Sid Meier's Civ. Maybe next time? Jonathan was interested too. I also 'might' have offered Eric a ride.

Feld's The Castles of Burgundy started off rather slow for Dan and Dave since they had boards with regular sized regions. I had a board with small regions so I was able to get a strong lead in points early on. Dan and Dave started to move in as they started scoring their regions in the midgame but I ultimately won with four extra points ahead of Dan. Luckily enough for me, my last tile placement was actually a Tower. Having not played the game since last July, I had completely forgotten how low on the interaction scale the game was.

Dave left and then Dan and I played Innovation with the Innovation: Echoes of the Past expansion. I had a strong lead in achievements and technology but Dan started to recover as he climbed up the tech tree. I made a critical mistake on the last turn opting to drain the 10 pile in the hopes of winning the game on the next turn as I had forgotten that Dan had access to Databases. He activated Databases, knocked my score down, and then drew from the 10 pile to end the game. What we noticed in this game was how quickly you could actually advance in tech with the new card drawing rules...

Sounds like Netrunnerlaugh. Rod had done the research and rules reading so I didn't have to explain too much and didn't have to add the flatline rule after it happenedblush
He got off to an early lead when all my ice didn't have credits to rez and made off with the first R&D agenda. Thought I had done a little better at protecting it and then setup some agendas with Precognition to allow me to make some secure servers just in time to get hit with the last Makers Eye and have both stolen. 7-0 rookie win. A little bit of bad planning, bad luck and probably not very well shuffled cards as all I saw early was ice, ice, ice.

Thought I would swap to my NBN deck for the second game to get away from the core Jinteki and found that a little more competitive and then got to play with some of the new cards. Won that using brain damage and showed that the Corp does have some tricks to stop the runner.

Not too worried about losing out on the new to me Rondel game. Like this one for a little less brain burning than Imperial, but not sure if it would have the same replay value. But I do want to try it again to try some other stuff out.
