This past weekend was the monthly Dallas Games Marathon. We coordinated an Arctic Scavengers launch party and tournament with the event and got very favorable feedback. As many as 5 games were going at one time and there were very few times throughout the weekend that there wasn't at least one game going.
17 people entered the tournament (3 others wanted to join, but arrived too late on Saturday to do so).
The tournament consisted of 2 mini-rounds (7 Contested Resources rather than 14) followed by a full final round (14 Contested Resources). The mini-rounds included HQ Expansion elements of Medic, and gangs of Gearheads and Pharmers. The final round we added in Rifles and also Tribal Leaders.
The final game consisted of 5 people:
*Kevin (playing The Cannibal)
*Troy (playing The Fanatic)
*Jacob (playing the Peacemaker)
*Rachel (playing The Ranger)
*Cody (playing The Butcher)
Kevin "enjoyed" being a Cannibal a little too much (evil laughter and a smug grin both occurred whilst 'eating' Refugees). He did well in the game and exchanged his Refugees into Medics using The Cannibal, but he failed to understand that medicine could be combined with cannibalized food (and by 'failed' to understand I mean that the game designer did not do an effective job describing the card text to him). This limited his options considerably. Additionally, his daughter was VERY enthusiastic about the inclusion of Rifles into the Junkyard - "Yeah Rifles!"
Troy was quite the character as the Fanatic, making an unforgettable noise that sounded rather aboriginal each time that he sent in a suicide bomber. He even managed to pick up an additional recruit from the Junkyard where someone had previously trashed a Refugee earlier in the game. Troy managed to snag more than one Contested Resource with his DEDICATED followers and served as King-Maker on at least one occasion.
Jacob played it cool as the Peacemaker. He tended to stay out of the skirmish over contested resources, preferring instead to focus on collecting supplies and hiring mercenaries.
Rachel rather enjoyed her Ranger's ability to teach her tribe to hunt more effectively. She also found considerable satisfaction in wielding a Rifle from time to time.
Cody rounded things out as the Butcher and managed to quite effectively sell internal organs in exchange for valuable resources. He was especially fond of his groups of Thugs.
Contested Resource battles were quite intense and the battle for survival was bloody and hard fought. In the end, Cody the Butcher prevailed!
Cody - 34
Rachel - 31
Jacob - 30
Troy - 26
Kevin - 23
A special thanks to everyone that participated in the tournament and a hearty congratulations to the 5 participants in the final round!!
