It wasn't me unfortunately, but worth a session report. We were playing a 4-player game. Fast forward to round 6 (of 8). One of our players does not have a single VP yet, and is also the only one of us whose locomotive is still at 5. The rest of us have 6 locomotives and between 15-20 VPs. We are jockeying for the few remaining cubes, trying to establish strongholds we can City Growth, while keeping an eye on the other two leaders.

Player 4, still at zero points, takes the City Growth action in Round 6. He proceeds to add 3 more cubes to the lone city on top of the board where he is the only player to have built routes to. None of us were concerned, because we were used to honing in on other players actions as soon as they did something. He adds 3 cubes to the existing pile to make 6 cubes. Immediately, all other players start building links to grab some of the action, however, he has insulated himself pretty well. He gets off 2 5-ships in that round for a quick 10 points, but still finds himself way back. In Round 7, he grabs Locomotive, which surprises us considering no one else can use that action. He upgrades his train to the max, but for the max amount of money as well. Other players now start stealing his cubes, but he is not concerned. When City Growthing, he picked a pile with 2 blue cubes, and he is the only one who has enough links to ship blue. Other players can't even use his routes because they don't have enough of their own. He ships 2 for 6 each. Now we are worried.

Round 8 starts, and he does not get First Ship. We figured we were OK, but as shipping starts, it quickly becomes apparent that he is getting 1 or 2 points for every cube shipped left on the board when shipped by another player. He manages 11 on his own! I City Growthed beautifully on Round 8, and managed to ship 2 of them for 12, but it wasn't enough. Player 4 went from zero to 44 in 3 turns to claim victory by 3 points! Ah, should have seen it coming....
