Kickstarter doesn't think my dice idea is innovative enough - lord knows why since all sorts of odd dice are approved every week. Anyway, so I'm using this as a chance to test out IndieGoGo as a platform. So please support us there - it's just like Kickstarter and well respected.

1 new "custom dice" campaign every week and kickstarter says your project isn't innovative enough? That's... odd.

I haven't had any interest in any of the dice campaigns I've seen so far, but yours is definitely interesting. Best of luck!

I have never tried IndieGoGo before, but I think that streak will be coming to an end with your project!

The thing to know about IndieGoGo is that it takes your money right away. If the project doesn't succeed, it will be returned.

I think they are more afraid that I'm just buying and reselling an existing product. They turned down my appeal even after making it very clear i was not though.

Anyway, it's about time I try indiegogo myself and compare the services. I don't think I'll find any surprises but ill be able to speak from personal experience.

I hope people give it a try. It wasn't hard to sign up

Thanks for the support,

James

They saw the many dice projects on their site ... and then you was the next in line.

good luck with Indiegogo

Good luck with this, if I had more money at the moment I would certainly get a set.

Although it would be nice to see d6 with dots on, and a pair of d6 available as part of a set.

The idea behind kickstarter is to provide venture capital to "NEW" innovative products. Or more to the point, to fund "art for art's sake". Giant foam dice already exist, so you aren't actually increasing the artistic value of the world's culture.

Good luck with wherever you wind up, though.
I think giant foam dice are a great product and the marketplace could definitely use more competition.

Don't Fudge dice already exist? Yet I've seen at least 3 types of those (including FATE dice) done recently.

We all know what a 7 set is for role playing. People make them all the time on kickstarter, this is no different, they are just made in foam instead of wood or metal like the others approve.

They are really showing their subjective side with this one as there is NO reason not to allow it and many reasons they should and already have allowed such things.

Now my campaign is going at a snails pace when it could have gone really well on Kickstarter.

One thing I want to mention, and I'm sure it's a cost issue, but the fact that a whole set of these dice will be the same color is a bit of a turn off for me.

If these were all different colors, like the samples I'd very much prefer them.

It's $200 per color change. I was hoping to maybe use that as stretch goals. But since I was "forced" to use IndieGoGo, I doubt we'll hit any stretch goals...

James,

I want to take the opportunity on this post to thank you for your insights on Kickstarter...all of which I've read during the past few months. While we had a wildly successful KS project, we're re-launching on Indiegogo because of the un-tapped number of gamers who have flocked to the site instead of KS, especially from around the globe. It's interesting that I saw your project on Indiegogo but didn't immediately associate you with it. I'll check it out again this weekend, and I'll certainly assist you in your endeavors.

Cheers,
Joe/the Professor

Thanks Joe. But I only did IndieGoGo cause KS didn't approve the project and cause of that I'm sure I'm getting 1/10th the support I would otherwise. I've talked to KS a bunch about this and with the right presentation and actual prototypes I should be able to run a KS campaign in the future.

That's interesting ~ I read various articles on the difference between the two sites, and one columnist put it quite bluntly referring to why he chose Indiegogo "I don't like Gatekeepers" ~ I'm frankly surprised by the fact you couldn't get your idea out on KS as there's a new dice project every few weeks, whether they're made of dinosaur bones or enriched uranium...anyway, I wish you the best of luck on both sites (eventually!)

Another counter-example is their repeated okay on decks of playing cards with new art. Not at all original but seemingly fine with KS.

In fact I just threw "card deck" in the search on KS and there are 8 such playing card projects in progress as I type this.

Sad that they down-checked this dice project.

I bought those same dice in the picture a couple years ago, same colors and everything! I even supplemented them with the same D6's that you have. I love 'em. They are super fun to throw at my DnD players when they aren't paying attention when it's their turn.

Best of luck with your project!

The key phrase here is "with new art".
I think if james offered larger foam dice (like 5" instead of 2") or made them glow n the dark or with special numbering instead of just supplying an item already being manufactured and sold in the same or mostly similar specifications, kickstarter would have less issue with it.

I can go to artscow and put a new picture on the back of a deck of playing cards inexpensively. If I order a bunch I can get a big discount.

I should do a KS for a "large turd on a rectangular white plate" cardback and see how many are interested. yuk

Not sure if my idea should be downchecked by KS for 'un-original project idea' or 'inappropriate content' or both.

Edit: Just wanted to note that I would have pledged for the dice had KS approved the project.

Kickstart would probably approve your card deck.
They did approve the "emperor's new game" which is a blank box with blank cards, several blank dice and some uncolored cubes.

Are you funding the indiegogo project?
If I had more liquid funds, I would.

I'd guess Kickstarters issue is that you're using currently available dice to represent what you intend to make. If you had done it with your own prototypes or with renderings and plain blocks of foam it probably would have gone through. If they see the exact same dice on amazon that you use in your pictures its going to raise a lot of flags. http://www.amazon.com/Learning-Resources-Jumbo-Foam-Polyhedr...
