So I was ideling in the chat in octgn waiting for my mate and saw something crazy... people going feral about the devs of octgn choosing to switch to a paid subscription. Apparently this is happening.. What do you guy think? Will you be willing to pay a monthly fee to use octgn ontop of buying the cards.. how about plugin developers... is that even fair top you.. and lastly.. is this even legal?

I can't find any information about it. I hope it was just someone's sick joke.

$3 a month is what my friend just messaged me as he was signing up.
What a travesty. Should be front page news on every site tomorrow!

This is real.. Doc himself confirmed it. OCTGN is dead... time for someone to make a good LackeyCCG plugin.

I don't mind paying $3 a month but I am afraid that many players will. And the player base will be much smaller which will lead to waiting much longer for a game.

There's also the issue that it's a paid service offering copywritten games that they do not have official permission to use. Once money gets involved, those copyrights' holders become less likely to ignore OCTGN.

$3 US a month is too much? I suppose that with an expectation of free, the shock of having to pay for OCTGN must be tremendous.

I think the tragedy here is the Devs could have set expectation for this change over a month ago when they announced the new version coming out with all the upgraded features.

They could have explained how it was necessary to move to a pay for play model because X, Y, Z wasn't working. Instead we get it 3rd hand from someone hearing about it in chat.

Poor form and will allow the narrative to spin out of control because the vast majority that will post up about this are those folks who are "outraged" by the gouging being done by the devs and those of us who will quietly weigh the cost to benefits of a subscription will quietly either stop playing on OCTGN or keep playing.

Welp, I will have to see if OCTGN is worth my limited money right now.

Yeah I'm kindof surprised. I had assumed that due to copyright issues, they would be unable to use all these game images/etc for commercial use. Before, when it was free, it wasnt a commercial use, and they tended to put only censored images up at first to avoid copyright issues.

How can they make this work if its for money now? Wouldnt they have to get a license with each CCG they wanted to put up?

Do we have any idea whether it's a mandatory subscription or just an optional one to get a few extra features? There's absolutely no information either way, just a subscribe option on the registration page.

Oh, who am I kidding, the internet doesn't listen to reason.

I could see a one-time fee to support the developer and maybe having to pay again if/when a major overhaul comes in. I can't really see paying a monthly fee, though.

Then again, I haven't really used OCTGN yet so I guess it's dead before it was even alive for me... whistle

Actually I heard its $3 per game. Sounds reasonable considering that they're promising that you'll get your ante cards 3D printed by your CD-ROM drive.

It does suck I don't have a CD-ROM drive though, Such a shame.

This violates copyright laws do not pay for a subscription because it will likely be shutdown.

UPDATE: The below info is obsolete. Please take a look at this thread.

OK what I know is that it's definitely moving to subscription with the following caveats

Existing players will still be able to use it for free. Subscription will only be required for new players, and only to access the online features. This mean people can still use OCTGN offline, via direct IP connection.

Unfortunately for new players, this means no making a lobby and waiting for people to join or joining lobbies. Also none of the new upcoming features coming such as save games and reconnect.

What I'm being told is that they're moving to this business plan because of server costs and because almost nobody donated

I do not know anything else about it.
