A few years back I heard somebody proposing that if computers ever pass the turing test (that is, be able to pass as human in a conversation), it will be the best advertising tool ever. You meet some "person" in a chat room, or via email, or some web forum, start exchanging emails...they seem really nice...they start telling you about some great book they read, convince you to buy it. But you've been had! You've been chatting with a computer that was owned by the book publisher!

Last night after reading BGG when I was way too tired to have the willpower, I finally got online and placed an order for a bunch of games, especially Power Grid. Gotta try it!

Now this morning, I'm wondering...maybe BGG is all some big AI experiment by the game publishers to convince us to buy more games? Maybe a bunch of the so-called people here are just robot shills talking about how much fun they have playing the latest game? Heck, maybe you're all just robot shills convincing me to place order after order...aaaaahhhhh! ninja

The fact that you think this does not exist right now is incredibly naive.

I am not saying that as a joke.

This isn't an evil plot. In evil plots, bad things happen. All that happens here is people tallk about games, buy games, play games. None of that is bad. Hence the answer to the questionn is "No".

I'd noticed a striking similarity to many of the posts on here--a certain dry formality at times, reminiscent of HAL in 2001, but I assumed that boardgamers were a self-selecting group, composed primarily of programmers with a mild variant of Asperger's syndrome. But now it all makes terrible sense. Terrible, terrible #$lds.ffsf---------------------

Maybe you're actually the shill-bot, and someone was on to you, and to throw them off, you suggest this idea because, c'mon, why would a shill-bot suggest the very theory that could get you exposed. Nobody would see it coming, so it's pure genius (except for the fact that I saw it coming). Death to Shill-bot wmshub!

Philip Thomas, you are now my #1 suspect as being a computer program! "No...not evil at all...just buy more games, it'll be all right..."

And as for the claims that I am a shill bot, I say you can come on over and check my pulse any time you want! And while you're visiting, I have some really neat games to show you...you may want to try them...maybe you'll even like them enough to make a purchase? I can give you the URL of an online retailer...

Maybe we need a series of questions, like in Bladerunner, to weed out the bots:

1. You see your mother, crawling through the desert, gasping for water. A nicely dressed man offers you the mint, 3d version of Caylus for the glass of water you are holding...

Bah - there's nowhere near enough blood, guts, sex and high-calibre weaponry to be a decent evil plot.

Now I think you are a shilling computer program owned by the Parker Brothers Every Home Needs at Least Two Copies of Monopoly Department. Your goal is to create dissent, paranoia, doubt and fear on BGG. You plan to convince us that we should have chosen the blue pill. You want us to turn our backs on Euros and ask to be plugged back into the Matrix in which all games are tedious, long and lack any real decisions and often results.

I have a mole in the Internet world that has been of assistance in the past. I went to her for help. It wasn't the first time.

Eliza: Hello. I am ELIZA. How can I help you?
You: Is www.boardgamegeek.com really an evil plot?
Eliza: Please go on.
You: I feel that it is merely a sophisticated computer system that is convincing me to buy board games.
Eliza: Why do you mention computers?
You: Because they are the only means to get to www.boardgamegeek.com.
Eliza: Do any other reasons not come to mind?
You: Because I am around them all day.
Eliza: Do any other reasons not come to mind?
You: No.
Eliza: You are being a bit negative.
You: Stop distracting from the issue! Is www.boardgamegeek.com really an evil plot?
Eliza: Can you elaborate on that?

And so it went. I think I will take Eliza's evasiveness as a sign that there truly is an evil plot.

Actually, thinking about this over supper (all alone as is usually the case for robots cry ) I decided that the robots/AIs wouldn't need to know they were such. In fact, knowing they were such would be a distinct problem, if they decided to be honest...so logically the programmers induce the beleif in the robot AIs that they are ordinary gamers going about their everyday business and ocasionally posting on Boardgamesgeek. In reality, its all coding and the only interaction with the real world is in the geek bit.ninja

Of course, this is a bit of a pointless theory since I might as well assume the world to be real on its own terms...
