I am curious to recommendations for this game and what modern game it compares to?

Actually, this question should be asked the other way around. Rex is a reimplementation of a much older game, Dune. I really liked Dune the one time I played it, and Rex was interesting as well. I'd recommend not allowing alliances on the first turn in Rex unless you want some very short games though.

Maybe a comparison to give you an idea is a blend of Chaos in the Old World and A Game of Thrones. You have very asymmetric factions with very different strengths. And you're forced to auction off things that give you an edge in the game while doing heavy negotiation and backstabbing.

Note: I'm just going off of Dune but Rex is supposedly a very faithful interpretation of the mechanics.
