We have a pretty intense Descent group when we play us vs our Overlord usually taking private strategy discussions where we have the Overlord leave the room while we plan our turn. This rules question came up concerning the errata.

Q: Can monster abilities that are not attacks affect familiars that are treated as figures?

A: Yes, any hero or monster ability, monster attack, or Overlord card that targets a hero can also target a familiar that is treated as a figure. Quest special rules that refer to heroes do not include familiars that are treated as figures unless specifically stated.

vs.

Overlord card, “Bloodlust”: The card should read, “Play this card when a
hero is knocked out. Draw 2 Overlord cards. This is in addition to your
normal 1 Overlord card drawn for defeating a hero.”

So the overlord killed our necromancer's familiar then played bloodlust, and drew a bunch of cards, we disagreed but kinda went with his ruling. What's the interpretation? I feel like while the Overlord can play cards on the familiar like he's a hero, such as pit traps or whatever, the familiar is a figure and not a hero right?

The key word on the card is "knocked out." The rulebook is very specific on what it means to be knocked out (lose all stamina, needs to be revived/stand up action, etc.). Having said that, only a hero may be knocked out. A familiar can never be suffer the status of being knocked out. It is only defeated and removed from the map. Therefore, the card is not playable when a familiar is defeated.

Indeed, a hero is a hero and a familiar is a familiar, a hero is a figure and on occasion a familiar can be a figure. A familiar and a hero can both be defeated, but a familiar is not a hero and so can not be knocked out.

The card was specifically changed to include the "knocked out" wording so that it wasn't playable on familiars.
