.....is get some chalets.

Isn't this the obvious first move for everyone? It seems so, which made us wonder why players don't start the game with perhaps 1 or 2 chalets already in place. We have very little experience of the game, so any comments would be welcome.

Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: Yes, but the amount varies, as the first player most likely would grab the largest chunk of tourists (up to 4) and then subsequent players may not need that many chalets. Or they may intentionally build more to prepare for next round. Or the last player may even choose to build attractions first because of its lower price.

What he said. Depending on the boats and player count the first move can vary, though more often than not it'll be chalets.

You may book tourists for a future week without having an open chalet to put them in but you cannot pick up tourists on the current boat without having an open chalet for them.

Thank you for the comments. Given that chalet buying is probably the obvious 1st move for everyone, do you think it would introduce more interest and variety to the opening turns, if everyone started the game with (say) 2 chalets already built?

It is likely (although not necessary) that everyone will buy chalets in the first round (first "week"), but there is often no need to buy them on the first turn (first worker placement).

Chalets are not a scarce resource, but attractions are (especially with fewer players) and future-week tourists are (especially with more players).

The entire game is about balancing choices against the available options. Examples above describe assorted possibilities on the first move. How does it introduce more variety by immediately eliminating one of those decisions, however common, from the fist move?

Ok, fair enough. When I spoke about more variety, I was only thinking about my own experience, which is that everybody always buys chalets on turn 1. I just though that having 1 chalet at the start might just mix things up a bit. Thanks anyway.

Disclaimer: I haven't played this game

To add some variety why don't you do something that nobody else does, like buy an attraction (s), especially if there are only one or two of them at the start. Also, do the actions that other people aren't doing. Try new strategies instead of always doing the same thing. Some games this would be more difficult though as you need to do certain actions as they are fundamental to the core game play. This will add variety to your game.
