Lets say the free people are besieging a shadow army stronghold. After the first round of combat, the shadow army still has some units and the free people want to continue the siege. They must downgrade an elite to a regular to continue.

Question is: What happens to the elite? Is it permanently removed from the game as it is during combat? Or does it return to the reserves. And, if it returns to the reserves, I assume that the regular unit that replaces it must also come from the reserves and cannot come from the dead units as in combat. Correct?

The Elite unit goes into the casualties. As with taking a casualty, the Regualar unit that replaces it may come from the casualties, or from the reinforcements if there are none in the casualties. If there are no Regular units available at all, the Elite is simply removed to the casualties.
