1. Calm the boiling rage that festers inside;
2. Try not to behead anyone with an axe;
3. Smile. A lot.

how do i be nice to people

I'm a school counselor for K-8 kids. They will tell you my secrets to being a good friend if you ask them are:

1. Nice face.
2. Nice words.
3. Nice actions.

I stole those from another counselor years ago and they work well.

Also, find things to compliment about other people, sincerely.

That's what I teach my kids at school, my own biological kids, and that's what I try my hardest to put into practice.

Thanks, Oliphant. I work with kids too and I've got a group of students who are really struggling with basic social skills. Your three simple rules are going to be shared on Monday and I hope we see improvement.

What age group do you work with? I could offer some more tips or resources if you like. Like How to be friends or if you have a grant to spend some money teach empathy with second step.

At some point I imagine you have to examine your goals, methods and results. If for instance, say you see a problem (like say you find yourself at odds with an overly zealous forum moderator) and you want to do something about it. You may speak out and correctly identify the issue, doing it in style, making folks laugh and really getting your point across.. but then what if you find yourself with people disliking you, misunderstanding your message and your account being blocked by forum moderators then it may be possible to deduce that it was in fact your own actions that caused your own oppression and the suffering of others. Tricky business this, getting your point across effectively. After examinations of my own methods and results I find more often than not that kindness and effectiveness of being understood go hand in hand.

Now, using the three rules (nice face, nice words, nice actions) you could still go ahead and be angry, determine to affect a change and create and execute plan of action BUT without yourself becoming the oppressive force you oppose.

Or as the good doctor says (that's MLK, not Dr.Who) "the ultimate weakness in violence is that it begets the very thing it seeks to destroy... Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

Really it's the same concept as what I had written previously.

Cheers.

I avoid them.

It seems to work okay most of the time.

This part is important. Swords are okay, but axes are so uncivilized...
