Crispy shell tacos should be crispy.

If you're serving me tacos that have been sitting so long that the taco shell now resembles a soggy, well-used pig ear dog snack, then you're insulting me and defiling the taco gods.

That is all.

I can scarcely abide a corn taco shell straight from the box. I always warm them in the oven for 5 minutes first, and now I'm completely spoiled.

Corn shells are almost unredeemable. But the heating them in the oven idea sounds solid.

Does that solve the problem of the shell bursting open and depositing the contents onto one's lap like a steam shovel delivering coal to a railroad car?

Still crispy, though! That's the important part.

No, but that's why I put a bowl in my lap instead of a napkin.

Exactamundo!
The heat softens the shell but it maintains its crunch. No exploding food on the first bite.

I turn on my oven to 300 F and when it first gets there, I turn it off.
Then I lay my taco shells directly onto the rack (on their sides) and leave them for 3 to 5 minutes. Any longer than that and they overbake and go back to ultra crunchy & fragile.
You just want to evaporate some of the water from them.

That's why I lean in over the plate.

That's why I tend to go with the burrito or the soft-shell. Never a bad move.

Yes please!!!

I am not really a taco fan, but a good Choco Taco or 2 for breakfast makes the day that much better....

You can also microwave them. Unless you microwave them for 1 SECOND TOO LONG.

Then they black-bubble up. It's weird and creepy.

We buy white corn tortillas at our local grocery, and when it's taco night, we make our own crispy shells by frying the tortillas in a large shallow skillet with about 1/8 inch of oil. After a few seconds of frying in the oil, I fold them in half to finish. The trick is to remove them while the bottom of the shell is still pliable. Fill with taco meat, lettuce, onion, tomoto, sour cream, guacamole, and cheese.

Can't remember the last time we bought store bought shells. But I agree with the suggestion to warm them in the oven.

Flour tortilla baked in the oven is the best crispy taco. Just put them on a upside-down muffin tin or a bread pan to make them into a taco shape.

While similar, fry bread is not the same as a puffy taco.

@Verkisto - if you come out to Phoenix, ping me and we'll go to one of the many hole-in-the-wall places and have good Mexican street tacos.
