Hello there,

I know it is a silly question, but...does the Runewars game (coffin edition) + expansion fit in the expansion box?

I ask so because I have a chance to buy the old coffin version quite cheap, but I have space problems at home. It would be a plus if I can manage to fit it all in the expansion box. Otherwise I will go for the smaller revised edition.

Thanks in advance

I believe it can be done BUT you have to cut the long 4 hex tile into two pieces.

ISTR the expansion box is just a standard depth where the revised edition comes in the deeper version.

You could probably squeeze both into the latter but the former? No chance

I saw a picture here in BGG. Some guy did it.

The "solution" was to bag everything and throw every kind of insert away to spare space.

There is only piece that didn't fit in the box...it is a map tile measuring 4 hexes long...

...the solution was... cut the piece in half using a sharp blade...

Hmm, I had forgotten about the long tile. A pity.

I actually did that for my carcassone copy (I cut in half the scoreboard so it all fits in an expansion box), but one thing is cutting a silly point tracker of a 20$ family game, and another one is cutting the biggest map tile. I will think on it. Maybe I find someone willing to trade me that one for the revised version?

Thanks a lot for the responses

No way at all you can make space?
The coffin version is the much better version IMO.
I wouldn't pass that up if you can help it.

Why do you think it is better? plastic mountains? thicker race sheets? or is there some other change that I missed?

For myself having the bigger box was part of it.
I just got into RW a few months back and hunted down a coffin size mainly for that reason.
I prefer to have plenty of storage for certain game.
The top of one of my game cases is nothing but big coffin sized boxes.
Rune Wars, Tide of Iron, Horus Heresy, and soon to be Descent 1E.
So theres that.
I know some (most?) dont have space for the big boxes, but I prefer them in certain cases.
For Runewars everything, including the Expansion is in the main box with the armies sorted out in plano boxes. Along with room for custom hexes Im doing and any future expansions. Which I really hope happen.

Past that, yeah, I really prefer the Thicker Race boards.
To the point that when the (hopeful) future expansions come out with new races Ill make up some custom ones in a similar size and style with the dials.

The plastic mountains are cool.
And IMO would be a great selling point if the Expansion didnt forgo them. The expansion did not have cut outs for the mountains.
For that, im thinking of using small magnets glued to the board and either making or buying small mountains to make work.
I really like the 3d look. But I would count that as a perk.

All that said, I believe I got it for about $50 a few months back.
It had a small ding on a corner of the box and was listed on a less traveled site so I got lucky there.
The revised editions sales for $52 on CSI and MM.
So use that as a guide.
Id say if you could get the revised version for $75ish or less it would be worth the difference.
But again, the large box is actually a good thing in my book.

Hope that helps

Edit: Just checked, there is a 1E Coffin size listed here in the marketplace for $55 plus shipping. Worth getting IMO.

Well I got runewars when it was still available (glad I did my favorite game) then I began collecting the big coffin boxes now I'm only missing Tide of Iron, StarCraft: The Board Gameand Twilight Imperium (Third Edition).

Tide of Iron and Twilight Imperium are still in print. Good luck finding Starcraft. The only coffin boxes I'm missing are ToI and TI, but also World of Warcraft (just didn't like that game, at all, so I doubt I'll ever hunt it down).

yup I think I'm going to get ToI next since it is going to be printed by another company and I don't know if they are going to keep the coffin box.
I got World of Warcraft for $50 so it didn't seem that expensive.

Is Starcraft worth it?
Ive glanced at that one and wasnt sure.

TI3 seem awesome, but I dont, nor do I ever think I will, have a constant and large enough player group to make it worth it.

I haven't seen what it's currently running for, but I think it's an incredibly fun game. The order mechanics can take a little bit to get used to, but to me at least everything seemed to just mesh.

There are a few on the bay at the moment, one with the expansion.
All seem to be around $50. For now.

Im watching reviews as I write this.
Being someone who likes it, what worth would you recommend value wise?
Example, I really like Battlelore, but I wont pay $80 for a Heroes expansion.
Thanks

I paid MSRP for it back when it first came out, so between it and the expansion about $110-120 total. I don't know if I'd pay that much for a used copy, but $50 seems to be a pretty good deal to me. For just the base game, I probably wouldn't pay more than $70 used, for both maybe $100 total would be my cap right now.

Thanks for the adivce.
Ill try and read some reviews on it and figure if it fits in my (IMO) massive collection.

I like Star Craft, it's definitely a lot more different than I expected though. It's not like the computer game in the tactical sense (battles are quick and relatively abstract) but a lot like the game in the upgrade/building sense.

And TOI is being printed elsewhere huh? Maybe I'll finally pick that up...
