The Deadzone KS has began and the game reached it's funding goal ($50,000) within an hour. We're currently sitting on almost $75k so 150% funded, hopefully some stretch goals get announced soon. Are people backed and what level did they go for? What are your hopes or fears for the KS and the game?

I backed at Strike Team level.. although in my mind I'm still considering dropping out later depending on what develops. No stretch goals were announced and given that they will likely double their goal in less than a day I don't know if they plan to add anything. It looks like a good value as is but not a GREAT value.. maybe worth waiting for retail discount.

I will need to see a set of rules (near final at least) before saying more, because there are a lot of great skirmish mini games out there already.

I really would like to see more terrain added to the Strike Team and above levels, along with the ability to purchase terrain sprues.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for backing us! We've got plenty more stuff to add into the pledge levels - including extra scenery and more models if we can get them funded.

If the progress we've made so far is anything to go by, this will be exceedingly great value by the time we're done!

Thanks,

Chris

I didn't even notice that they were putting the next stretch goal in the updates.

That would be the law of sod! The new scenery is cool but not massively exciting and already seen the new sculpts/art in the video. Really looking forward to seeing what else comes up though, this is taking off already so sure we've got loads of stuff to see.

Early bird strike team. Their Kings of War KS was very generous with the stretch goals, and while I didn't participate in Dreadball, that was too. I look forward to seeing this baby unfold.

And am so happy they went with a board, instead of rulers! Here's to hoping a stretch goal (soon) will be a nice chessex-style high quality larger than 2'x2' mat!

Any word on the rules? I just read on another group that the plan is to maybe have "alpha rules" available within a week. I'm hoping that's inaccurate and you didn't create a Kickstarter project for a game that doesn't even have rules?

I have heard that their are plans for a possible solo play rules, have any of you heard this because I thought it was just a 2 player skirmish game?

A solo game set of rules is being muted and asked for by some, as are expansion rule games to include 3 - 4 players. It seems both may be doable, hopefully.

If they created one, Galaxy Defenders definitely would be history for me!

@Chris - the rules are in what I am calling an Alpha stage at present. Although they are playable, they aren't as refined as I want them to be yet, and as we don't yet know how far the Kickstarter will go I am uncertain exactly what will be added on to my list of things to include. I may have to write a bunch of extra rules and factions I wasn't expecting to be able to fit in if things go well.

My aim is to put out an Alpha version next week. That will be the playable core mechanics. I'll continue to work on play testing and balancing this core while listening to any feedback from the community. Depending on how things go this will either lead to updates, a second alpha or a final beta before the KS ends. However we end up doing it there will be a largely finished set up before the end of the KS.

This way we get to put the game in your hands sooner and include more of the things that the community wants to see. If I just dumped something complete in front of you there would be far less opportunity for feedback and change, and I think that would be a shame.

Obviously you'll be able to see whether you like it or not when you've got the rules

Kickstarter emailed, stating that Deadzone has already gotten more funding in its first day than Mantic's last KS - Dreadball - got in its first week.

So I am looking forward to lots of freebies, having pledged an early bird striker.

But don't care for how closely the Deadzone plague and effects seem to echo the nasty stuff going on in Sedition Wars.
But other than the background, I like what I see so far, especially the power-armored Orx...

@Rob - as I understand it, the main dynamic of SW Strain is to do with their mutating during play, and that doesn't happen in DZ.

Bah! All this talk of solo play is nice, but let Mantic never forget their roots. I know this is BOARDGAMEgeek, but as a table-top miniatures gamer, I want that grid gone, and tape-measures a requirement.

Incidentally... no, i'm not kidding.

You'd better get ready to do some house-ruling then... (though maybe Jake could throw that in to the rules as an optional way to play the game???) devil

I think we need a name for this type of game, and I'm casting a vote for "woard game" - a war game/board game hybrid...

Solo play is definitely something I am interested in, if anybody is taking notes.

Cheers,

Double sided board maybe? One with grid and the other without.

People are backing games with no rules or actual gameplay video? I must be in crazytown. If our economy was in a deficit you wouldn't know it from watching the insanity of Kickstarter. Simply WOW.

Mantic's been 'round for awhile, makes great minis, and has really fun rulesets.

You know you can pledge, read the updates and the rules as soon as the post 'em, and drop out if it sucks right? There's no penalty to bailing.

But. Er. Yea. It's full of plastic toy soldiers... KS is *the* platform now for plastic toy soldier games... God bless 'em.

Why not? It is from a company with a proven track record of delivering quality and from a well respected games designer. Even if the game turns out to be rubbish (which I doubt it will) you get some decent miniatures and a lot of scenery which is well below the market rate price for such scenery and can be used in many other games.

It is being muted that it will be double-sided, one side more for learning the game though.

What I want is 'expansion' boards, that way the game could grow tremendously. Otherwise it will mean designing my own boards for expansion, I mean making boards with 3 inch squares on them would be so hard (not). Imagine boards with sewer entrances (enter the Veer-Myn), or a quadrangle big enough for a drop pod to land, and of course then room to bring in an armoured unit or two. (drool)

Anyway as the KS has already reached $186k in less than a day I reckon this can safely be classed as 'going to be huge'!

Mantic have also announced that the first 'add-ons' should be going up today as well - depending on what they are this could rocket the funding even more.

Apparently they've hinted at Forge Fathers and Teratons as add-ons although I think the latter might come in some sort of combined faction as that was what Jake had hinted at previously. We'll probably see BOGOF offers on new factions like they did with Dreadball.

As for the gaming mat they've more or less said that one of the stretch goals will be for the mat to become a rubber one which is good as paper, no matter how high quality, is going to be a bit flimsy. I'd hope for double sided too for some variety as well as a way to expand it.
