In my first handful of games with the courtesan, she had been constantly maligned and frequently was half as elegant or less than the other ladies. This was because the gentlemen could see exactly what each other had provided and frequently didn't simply chose not to purchase anything if they were doing any better than the least contributing husband (who himself often couldn't contribute due to being poor at his job!).

Last night, we tried throwing in a wrench into the works: the courtesan keeps her the items purchased for her face down, allowing the gentlemen to see how many items each other player bought her, but not the value of them. Of course, a player with a keen eye can track how much the other players are spending, but this simple change catapulted the contributions of the gentlemen to the point of leading the courtesan to victory.

If playing this variant with the gossip variant, any lady can attempt to give the courtesan a gossip card if they think that it might be a legal play. The card is handed to the courtesan face-down and she examines it. If the courtesan is not a valid target for the gossip, she returns the card and the person who played it may try again (as in, she has not spent her gossip action for the turn). The courtesan should give a witty dismissal of the attempted gossip. If it was legal, then the courtesan keeps the gossip as normal, and it is the done thing for her to entreat the lady with some variation of "Well, let's hear it then."

Sounds like the only way to play the Courtesan to me. Thanks!

To play the courtesan, you must talk to the gentlemen, give them good reasons to buy you things (in all my games, she was never the last : no one wish to lose because he did not paid enough things to her), and choose not too expensive clothes so they can buy things both to you and their lady.
