Hi All

Can anyone suggest the best North African Campaign Game. I am looking for something that takes in the whole war from the intital Italian attacks 1940 to the end in 1943.

Not worried about the complexity or price or even if the game is now oop.

Many Thanks

Steve

Hosni Mubarak's campaign which won him the Egyptian Presidency in 1981 was pretty awesome. But I see it's out of your timeframe

1940-1943 just like you said. Captures the entire war.

I hear its epic!

Fortunately, there is a big choice.

Note: almost all of these end in 1942, omitting Tunisia and Torch.

DAK (or DAK2) is one of the largest (5 map), but still playable, games on the subject. It also has a large amount of scenarios. You can also get Tunisia, showing the final withdrawl of the Axis from North Africa, and is widely regarded as the best game to learn the series with. Reluctant Enemies will cover Syria, but is not out yet.

The Campaign for North Africa is almost exactly the same physical size as DAK, but is really designed for team play.

Afrika (second edition) is a solid 2 map game.

The Desert Fox and it's sequel Trail of the Fox also cover Libya and Tunisia, but personally, I hate the supply system. It also doesn't cover the Italian invasion of Egypt, although there is a variant for that out there.

Someone will no doubt mention Rommel in the Desert, I haven't played it.

War in the Desert is the Europa module. It's big and stupid.

Shifting Sands is a card driven game, covering not only North Africa but East Africa as well.

There are many other smaller games.

My favorite 18xx game for six players is two games of 1846 with three players each.

If I understand you correctly, you are looking for a game that covers the entire area from Safi in Morocco to Cairo. There are few games that fit this description, and most of the ones already mentioned on this list don't go past El Agheila in Libya.

Ok, I'll mention it.

Block game with hidden units revealed at time of combat only meaning there's no calculating perfect 3:1 attacks and the like. Very tense, with a focus on supply capacity and supply lines that means a position can crumble dramatically.

Rules are relatively simple for a wargame. There's a lot of differentiation between ground unit capabilities but air and sea units are abstracted out. You need to understand the interaction between the movement/combat system and the supply system to play well.

Libya/Egypt only, so no Americans or Operation Torch. there are a number of scenarios focussing on individual operartions as well as the 41/42 campaign. I've not played the full campaign game but I suspect it would take several hours to play.

It's been around a long time but keeps coming back into print.

Seconding Shifting Sands. Covers the whole campaign, and it's hella fun.

It's oop, but that doesn't seem to bother you.
