What's your take on Muhal Richard Abrams Orchestra's Blu Blu Blu?

Here are my, mostly uninformed, ramblings.

(PS. Includes brass.)

Saying "If you like jazz..." and suggesting a song is like saying "If you like board games..." and suggesting Monopoly. You're treating an art form that contains many sub-genres and styles as though it were a single unified thing.

I think the name of this song is "Move". So, maybe a modification from

If you like jazz : Move : : If you like board games : Monopoly

to

If you like jazz : Move : : If you like board games : The Castles of Burgundy

might be more accurate.

This is the Jazz I love:

Freddie Hubbard - Straight Life, Red Clay
Grant Green - Solid
McCoy Tyner - Atlantis
Dave Brubeck - Jazz Impressions of Japan, Time Out
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue, Bitch's Brew
Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners, Solo Monk, Monk's Dream
Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Art Tatum - Alone and with Friends
Mingus - Tijuana Moods, Town Hall Concert
Ornette Coleman - The shape of Jazz to Come
Count Basie - Straight Ahead
Archie Shepp - New Thing at Newport
David Axelrod - Songs of Innocence
Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda
Eric Dolphy - Out to lunch

This is my measly record collection of Jazz(Don't bother searching, they all have brass/reeds)

I find your lack of Esperanza Spalding...disturbing.

Although, for a thread that apparently has some haters in it, already...I generally find that Melody Gardot works quite well as a 'bridge'. She's not really jazz...but kinda is...enough that, well, she works as a bridge.

Does she sing with a sax? Croone with a cornet?

I know what those dudes play and I don't doubt your tastes, just excluding keys seems a bit... odd.

Did you bother to play the video above? Sex Mob is probably right up your alley, especially if you like Ornette Coleman or Archie Shepp.

What about Cecil Taylor? or Thelonius Monk (edit: do you like him without horns)? or Chick Corea? Dang.

I love classical music too, and I'm also not a fan of just piano concerto's that don't have a brass/reeds accompaniment.

I like wind instruments. And to me, Jazz has brass.

Do you like Science Fiction by Ornette Coleman? Just curious, because he and Shepp were some pioneers of Free Jazz, which sounded like disheveled noise to me years ago, but has since grown on me.

His early album Shape of Jazz to Come I liked, but when the 70's reigned in he just got to far out there with his avant-garde form for my tastes.

I've been on a Jim Rotondi jag lately. Restrained and nuanced, sometimes reminds me of Miles. But he's also got chops and can handle a swinging up tempo.

The original post reminds me of the Japanese group Mouse on the Keys. Are they? (I don't read Japanese)

Other stuff you may like if you like this:

Bad Bad Not Good - who frequently collaborate with Odd Future/Tyler The Creator and TNGHT and do crazy things like jazz covers of James Blake

NOMO who is sort of carrying the Fela Kuti Afrojazz torch (along with Antibalas):

And lastly, Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet (which features Skerik from Critters Buggin', Stanton Moore, and several other collaborators from Galactic and the New Orleans scene, if you're familiar with them)
