It looks like a fabulous game, but does it play well with 2?

It isn't too bad, but it is definately a stronger game with more players. The best alternative would be Fifth Avenue. It is as strong of a 2 player game as it is with 4 players. Same amount of depth.

It's not worth it. Play something intended for 2. I'm willing to give Maharaja a chance with more, but don't bother with 2.

Maharaja is a fabulous game, but best played with 4/5. If you're looking for a good 2-4/5 player game: Puerto Rico, La Città, Attika, Carcassonne, St. Petersburg, Attila, Tikal, San Juan.

Edit: OK, you already own half of those...

Playable, but not that great. It's better with more players.

I like it just fine with 2. Haven't tried it with 4 or 5 yet, but I bet they're better.

Apparently I'm in the minority here, but I actually enjoy it quite a bit with two. It makes the game more strategic and less chaotic. I agree that it's funner with more because of the added tension, but it's still one of my favorite games with any number of players.
