Difficult: Arkham Horror is the best 1 player I have come across. There a number of single player card games (patiences, in English). Otherwise I would recommend looking for online games.

I don't have any solo games to add. Here's a few links that may help you get some boardgaming in on the PC (or at least try some new games for when you do get together with your friends).

http://www.columbia.edu/cu/csss/csss-other-resources.html

It has a section for Online gamine. I'd try BrettspielWelt (or more commonly called BSW here on BGG). If not that, than download the demos.

"Free Computer Version of Board and Card Games with Artificial Intelligence Computer Opponents and with Screen Shots " geeklist. I've wasted weeks on the Java based San Juan game found on the list (http://www.compoundeye.net/jsanjuan/index.html).

"Free Computer Artificial Intelligence Opponents for Abstract Strategy Games with Screen Shots" geeklist.

Best of luck...and welcome to the geek!

Knizia's LotR can be played solitaire without problems; just use 2 or more Hobbits, as if there were more players. Since there's no hidden info in the game, unlike Shadows over Camelot, it works fine as a solo game.

P.S. what about playing online? "real time" (as BSW) or not (as SBW).
