Hi,

Summer's here, and my gaming group is likely to start wanting to do antisocial things like going outside.

We'd like to all go for a cucle with our sppuses somewhere to have a picnic. Can anyone recommend a suitable game for is to take along?

Parameters: card game, minimal surface needed (no table, hands plus discard and draw pile would be best, maybe a pile of tokens or beads or something wpuld be ok), multiple players (2-6 perfect), playing time 1 hr max, with theme please.

Any advice would be great.

Slightly quirky suggestion: Hanabi - has the advantage of being co-operative. Has the disadvantage of being harder than it looks!

Race for the Galaxy is going to require more space than it sounds like will be available. The tableau alone can spread out pretty decently.

Maybe something like Citadels, or The Resistance. Citadels does 2 players well, plus accommodates a larger group. The Resistance you need more people for, but is a blast and requires almost no space really.

If you have 5-10 people, The Resistance:Avalon is a very social and intense game.

For something lighter Dixit Odyssey (+ any other Dixit for more cards).

Both require very little table/ground space. (Android:Infiltration and Race for the Galaxy are not at all suitable because of this.)

Mundus Novus could be a good fit, though their might be a few more tokens than you'd like. Check out a review from Shut Up and Sit Down [geekurl=http://www.shutupshow.com/post/31190292913/season-2-episode-5-the-summer-special]here.[/geekurl].

Review starts at 03:34.

Zombie Fluxx (or a Fluxx themed to your liking)
Dungeon Raiders
Gloom (or Cthulhu Gloom if it suits you more)
UNO is an old classic for family-fun gaming

I've got plenty more I could suggest, but if you're looking for some light-hearted fun that won't take over a nice day out then these are certainly easy going enough to suffice

I don't think Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game is really a picnic sort of game...

I doubt it will be produced in time for this summer, but you could join the Kickstarter for Coup for next summer. Alternatively, you could try to find one of the first edition sets or just improvise your own with a set of playing cards while you wait. But it sounds perfect for what you're asking for: 2-6 players, minimal table space, and some theme (albeit light).

Something else that would work for 3-6 but would require some minimal amount of table space would be Saboeteur 2. You really need the second version, not the first, to incorporate a selfish dwarf to make it fair and interesting for even numbers of players.

Or you could just throw in a regular pack of playing cards. You can play everything from spades to hearts to bridge to Oh Hell to, well, a million things.

Hahaha! Yeah, I totally agree.

+1 for The Resistance: Avalon (it does need a certain amount of players, though... 5+)

Maybe King of Tokyo?

Maybe there isn't enough space for rftg, but if there is- it is the best strategy game on this list. It is what we play camping with friends and spouses. Only takes a towel, blanket or if you happened to be around a picnic table. Bad on windy days, though. Although, the space needed isn't really different from citadels and it isn't more likely to be ruined by wind than the resistance.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, everyone!

Anything with any kind of tableau is out of the running, we need something where the cards are either held in hand, in a discRd pile, or in a draw pile. However, I have The Resiatance but we've never played it - maybe we'll give that a go, I think we coukd use the box and lid as our discard/draw places.
