I'm looking for a game that is similar to the gameplay of classic games like x-com, fallout or shadowrun.

I know something out there has to exist, as it seems easy to replicate. It's basically like a miniature dungeon game. We've tried a few (like drizzt) but they've been far to "bare"

*can't be dice chucking just for the sake of dice chucking
*Would like it to have characters that lvl
*Would prefer a non fantasy theme
*Would like it to have characters that play differently and/or with their own abilities or ability deck.

thanks for anyone who can help!

(I know about target earth, not really looking for the building side of things or a game with a million chits)

X-com makes me think gears of war. Not sure if that fits what you are looking for.

If you're open to war games, Infinity might be worth checking out.

Otherwise, Galaxy Defenders seems like the kind of game your looking for (it goes for a cheesy sci fi feel, very classic X-Com). It's still on Kickstarter, but that might not be a bad thing if your a fan of extra bits.

Doom: The Boardgame is the closest I can think of themewise, although Tannhäuser would be a better fit mechanically for your preferences.

Same here. You might seriously want to check out some reviews of Gears of War: The Board Game.

Also, you might want to check out Sentinels of the Multiverse. It's a superhero theme, but it seems to have some of the gameplay elements you are looking for.

thanks for the suggestions, I will check these out.

to clarify, I'm after the tactical movement and uniqueness of units of the x-com, fallout, shadowrun types of games.

Everytime someone ask for an X-Com / Fallout game i refer them to the game i believe is the closest:
Necromunda

It's a skirmish sci-fi game with individual squads going after each other with characters that gain in abilities and experience between each game. The game is designed for campaign play.

Of course, being a Games Workshop "specialist game" it means it's expensive and requires painting miniatures, but it is currently in print.

The rulebook is free (downloadable from Games Workshop website), a miniature "army" will cost you around 50$ (for one side).

Another recommendation for Tannhäuser. As far as Necromunda, you could also check out Mordheim: City of the Damned, which is the same thing but Warhammer Fantasy themed.

Surprised more people have mentioned Earth Reborn. Each character is completely unique, tactical miniature game, tons of options, map is always different.

Only thing it doesn't have that you want is leveling up, but no game mentioned in this thread besides Necromunda has that.

I'm a longtime Fallout fan and I purchased Earth Reborn specifically in an attempt to scratch that itch. I'm not going to tell you to run out and buy it as I have only just scratched the surface of the game. But I like what I have seen so far, both thematically and mechanically.

This may be out of left-field, but how about Okko: Era of the Asagiri?
It's not sci-fi, it's samurai, but it does have individual personalities dueling within a confined space across several different scenarios & modular tiles.
And to shamelessly self-promote, I have a pretty good review here that encapsulates how the game works (such modesty!)

Until you said character leveling, i was gonna reccomend Android:Netrunner. It definetly has a Shadowrun like vibe to it, making runs against the corporation and whatnot.

thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for.

I appreciate everyone who suggested games. Earth Reborn looks pretty cool, though seems to have a huge time commitment. Even though, I'm still considering it. About to watch some stuff on Tannhauser.

The other various miniatures games look cool, but way out of reach due to high cost.

There is a pretty decent fan-made Shadowrun mod for Arkham Horror if you look around the web...

That's not what he's looking for at all. He's not just asking about something with a similar theme. He is looking for a tactical movement and execute game, probably with miniatures.

As a massive X-COM and FF:Tactics fan, I spent a while with this same query.

With exception to Galaxy Defenders (because its unreleased), all the others games in this thread came up lacking for me. Hopefully something we'll get that game!

Gears of War or Tanhauser might work well for your needs.

Gears plays differently then the video game, its more of a tactical combat game, all the Characters except Dom play the same who doesn't get a lancer (not sure) the play difference comes from the fact that all your playing is done from cards in your hand (movement, attack, defense etc). It runs on an AI system like Legend of Drizzt (and likewise can be played solo) except is just uses one deck for the mission, and the card you draw says what you do, you don't just keep an enemy card on the field until it dies it all runs off the AI deck.

Tanhauser I don't have experience playing, but have read over the rules a few times and it seems like it would work well, you control a team of characters and each has a different play style and each player controls a team, you aren't playing against the game like a co-op.
