Hello all!

Just now getting back into the hobby and was a HUGE fan of Man 'O War (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/2516) and it's expansions from Games Workshop about 10 years ago. I loved the miniatures battles that involved fleets of ships.

I was wondering if any of you can recommend a game that has the following elements:

Miniatures
Space Battles
Involving Fleets of ships
The fleets have small and large ships (ie Fighters up to Capital ships)

The cheery on top would be micromanagment of each individual ship ala Man 'O War (I remember you had to keep track of each ship and the damage they took ... ie Underwater hits to hits to the masts with each hit causing a different negative effect).

Yes I did see Battefleet Gothic and that is close to what I'm looking for but was looking for something closer to Man 'O War (but in space).

Thanks again!

Take a look at Full Thrust. It has various size ships from the large capitol ships to small fighters. The ship designs are very flexible, the rules are not too complicated but detailed in my opinion. The rules are available as a PDF download from GZG I think.

You can use any models with this. We have a few offical FT fleets but use the rules with Battlefleet Gothic ships and Star Trek ships as well.

Brian,

I second Full Thrust! Great game, you can design your own ships, and the rules are detailed but not complicated.

Can download the rules here:

Check out Silent Death:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/3895

It meets all your requirements except for one -- there's no capital ships. There are really big gunboats however. They did this so the game would remain fast and balanced, and able to use normal miniatures for regular fighter ships. A capital ship wouldn't fit on the space map that's used in the game (and it's a biiiig map).

Micromanagement is there, as damage tracks are used. The more damage taken, the more the ship is falling apart. Gives you the nice feeling of trying to hold your ship(s) together and eek out a win.

Lots of supplements and expansions too. Hope this helps!

There are almost too many rules to go through. Start with the Free Miniatures Rules page:

http://www.freewargamesrules.co.uk/

Some that you may want to look at are "Full Thrust", "Sky Full of Ships", and "GOBS". Since they're all free, this site should keep you busy for a while. :-)

I have a personal interest in space combat miniature games too. The current favorite of mine is Babylon 5: A Call to Arms. I love Babylon 5, and I've always loved the ships in that show.

Full Thrust is interesting, though I haven't played a game of it yet. I have the rule book, and the mechanics aren't tough. And the rules also try and simulate zero-g movement, whereby a ship would continue to move in one direction unless an alternate force is applied on it.

There's an online Java implementation of Full Thrust which can be found here: http://home.nycap.rr.com/davisje/ftjava/

There is also a website that is dedicated to miniature space combat games. It has a list of all the current systems out there, plus upcoming ones. One particular game that has caught my interest in With Hostile Intent.

Battlefleet Gothic is my pick. Great looking minis.
The rules are downloadable.
This game seems to fit your criteria.

I haven't played it, but I've a interest in "Attack Vector: Tactical" and the "Honor Harrington" version they have of it...I'm going to butcher the spelling..."Sangonami"

I believe that the "Honor Harrington" version comes with models you can buy and not just the base ships, but they're not minatures in what you're asking for.

I just throw it into the mix because it's on my mind. I'm checking out the others mentioned as well.

Take care and have fun!

I have to agree with Palpatine on this one. IMO BFG is one of the best games that GW have ever produced. Also, unlike most GW games, this one doesnt require you to take out a second mortgage in order to play.

You might also like to try Lightning Strike from Dream Pod 9 http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/3890 It plays fast, has everything from fighters/mecha up through Space stations. It comes with six pages of counters but you can buy minis (they look pretty cool). B.Gothic looks great and plays pretty fast but unless you have lots of $ you might want to try one of the others.meeple

Not sure if it is what you are looking for, but you might try the STARMADA system. There are many minis already statted(?) for the system, or you can design your own:

It's a point-based build system, so your fleet sizes would be dictated by the build points allocated for the battle.

I'll second Silent Death -- it's an amazing system. You've got lots of options and advanced rules to customize the gameplay to your comfort and experience level, dozens of ship templates to choose from when building your fleet, dozens of pre-designed scenarios to run from all the different supplements, and amazing mechanics.

The mechanics are based on two main innovations -- the "all in one" combat roll which factors in the accuracy of your weapon and your gunners, and with a single roll of the dice determines if you hit and how much damage you inflict.

This is tied closely to the great tracking sheet for each ship's damage control -- a single grid of boxes to check off when damaged... Take 5 points of damage? Just mark off 5 boxes. But wait! Some boxes have additional information in them, so if you had to check off a box with an Engine Rating modifier in it, your Engines weaken. If you took enough damage to check off that box with the Shield Generator in it, your Shield rating drops.

One of my favorite campaign systems, and my favorite ship-to-ship combat system of any genre! Definitely worth checking out!!
