Brief session report for the Game of the Month Club. 01/18/06

Matt D., Jon M., Chester O., and Jay M. played Age of Steam on the Scandinavia map. As this was Matt's first time playing, the rules were reviewed and the special ferry rules of the Scandinavia map were introduced. Jon and Jay started with tight placement in the center of the board with Chester slightly peripheral to the mess in the middle and Matt off to himself in the south. The board has some very nice geographical constraints that were not immediately apparent and a lot of inefficient building probably occurred. As the game progressed, Jon developed an early lead that melted away after spending a turn not building at all and also weird results in goods growth. The cities in the center of the board did not undergo resupply for the first three turns of the game and the white 5 never resupplied. Control of at least one of the trans-sea routes seems vital in this game - otherwise it is difficult to transfer goods long distances. No blue cities are coastal, so early connection to at least one of the blue cities or strategic urbanization of the blue "New City" early in the game seems important. Urbanization was used in the early portion of the game solely in the periphery and as such precluded many players from getting in to those new cities. This move (done in whole by Chester) allowed new goods growth in positions far away from the rest of us. As a result of his use of urbanization, his claiming of a trans-sea route and being able to make 6-length shipments, Chester won. Matt played an admirable first game coming in second. Jay made it a close third and Jon came in last after having a strong initial showing. It appears that the relative strengths of the roles are different on different maps.

Chester: 58 (19 2/3)
Matt: 52 (17 1/3)
Jay: 50 (16 2/3)
Jon: 43 (14 1/3)

I may have these scores wrong... I am pretty sure that Chester's and mine are correct and that Matt and Jay were close together in the middle...
