I played Top Race last night and it was the first real race game I have ever played. I really liked a lot of how the game was played, betting, screwing other players, ect. I was wondering if anyone could tell of some other race games that may be better. Horse, car, bike, whatever.

Thanks in advance.

Jason

I think the most ingenious race game i've ever played was "Breaking Away" a bike racing game. My other favorite has to be "Ave Ceaser" (And not Q-jet)

As grey traces of dawn tinge the eastern sky, the three travellers, men of Willowdale, emerge from the forest's shadow. Fording the river, they turn south, journeying into the dark and forbidding lands of The Necromancer...

If you are attracted to the wagering and "take-that" feature of race games then I can recommend "Win, Place, and Show" (originally published by 3M and then re-published by Avalon Hill). You play the role of horse owner, jockey, and gambler in this game. The format of the races seems to invite mathematical analysis to determine a best possible course of action, but this seems to be a false lure and you cannot truly predict just when the longshot will ruin your best laid plans.

The original edition of Knizia's Turf Horse Racing is great fun. It's a dice-roller with simple decisions. The re-issue Royal Turf had terrible tweaks, a staggered start ?? sprint bonuses ??, when did they enter horse racing? Find the original or at least play by the original rules.

If you liked Top Race you'll probably also like Daytona 500 which is basically the same game system with a few changes. Around these parts the concensus seems to be that it's the best of the Wolfgang Kramer racers. I have a copy and absolutely love it.

I also haven't played many racing games but have a lot on my radar including Breaking Away, Turfmaster (ooooh pretty!) and Roborally.

I really like Pitchcar Mini and I bet Pithcar (big one) is even better, if you don't mind dexterity games. I had fun playing Formula DE Mini and Race Day. I guess I am pretty easy to please.

A fun little race card game I recently picked up is Cthulu 500. It's almost a beer and pretzels game and a lot of fun. I broke it out at a recent game meeting and the folks who played said they were surprised at how much fun it was. You can drive "The Car man was not meant to drive" and mount the "Tires man was not meant to mount". You can even do human sacrifice of a member of your pit crew...ok zombie sacrifice but wouldn't the Daytona 500 be a bit more entertaining if they sacrificed a member of the pit crew every once in a while?

Miguel why not Q-jet? I cannot comment on Ave as have not played it but Q-jet is a great race game for all ages and is a whole lot of fun.

Others that have been mentioned that I find fun or on my wishlist

Um Reifenbrite
Das Motorsportspiel
Bolide
Formula de mini

Ave Ceaser is an experience. The theme, the quality of the component is excellent. q-jet is the same same mehcanics wise, but unless you throw your drakma and yell "AVE CEASER!" At the top of your lungs, you've missed the magic. Wait for the reprint( Which is coming soon). meeple

"Snail Race" is kind of unique and cute, and pretty fun as a light diversion or to play with casual gamers.

"Thunder Road" is a pretty cool combat race game. Played this a few times and it's a good time shooting and smashing other cars. Pretty short, too, which makes it a good filler. Kind of like playing an old arcade game-hybrid of 'Spy Hunter' and 'Bump-n-Jump' (do any of you even remember those? I'm not THAT old...)

My gaming group plays both 'RoboRally' and 'Fearsome Floors' on a regular basis.

Of the two, I think FF is more accessible. Also, it's shorter. RoboRally can go on forever sometimes.
